74.0. "Customer needs FDDI 50km apart" by ZPOV03::HWCHOY (FE110000) Mon Jun 04 1990 07:55

    Where can I can information (PID or otherwise) regarding single-mode
    fiber? What is our position on this issue as regards to it being
    non-standard (yet). There is a local customer who have sites that are
    separated by distances of 20-50 km. Part of the backbone is already
    laid with Sumitomo fibers. I need this information badly to make sure
    this customer choose DEC as the backbone provider. They will run at
    least 200 workstations (they now have 10 HPs, we hope to sell our
    DECstation 5000s) and lots of serverss distrubuted over 5 or 6
    locations.

    Long term solution is fine, as their procurement cycle will be in
    calendar year 1991/92. But we must have something or some direction for
    them now.

    Please help, Thanx!

74.1...and mobile too!ZPOV03::HWCHOYFE110000Mon Jun 04 1990 07:5914
    BTW, this is a military customer. Some of their sites are mobile, and
    want to know if it's possible to have FDDI speeds to their mobile site.
    They are willing to stop and setup the comms link whenever they move to
    a new location. Do we have a solution? Even a 10Mbps solution will be
    worthwhile. Microwave is probably not feasible as there will not likely
    to be line-of-sight linkage. Have we done anything similar or other
    Militaries?

    I have replied via mail to the author of the base note. Digital is
    "actively pursuing" a SMF solution. Since this is a future product, it
    isn't appropriate to discuss it in a public forum such as notes. If
    you'd like more information, contact the Area Network Consultant for
    your area.
