63.0. "Concentrator Features...?" by CSOA1::SEITZ (LOST-IN-SPACE) Mon May 14 1990 17:59

I have been reviewing a copy of the FDDI System Level Description which
I expect will be published shortly...

Within the description on concentrator operation, it states that a
concentrator will look at the destination address on each frame and, if
not destined for an address connected to that concentrator, nor the
concentrators own address, it will send it immediately out to the next
    concentrator on the ring.

    1. Is this true?

    2. Is this a special feature for Digital concentrators or is this part
    of the standard?

    3. It would seem that this could be quite a performance feature. Will
this functionality work for addresses on other concentrators further
    out the tree?

Nope, this is not how a concentrator operates. If the concentrator
has a MAC in it, then the MAC will 'look' at the destination address (DA)
on each frame and copy it if the DA matches its own address, one of the
supported multicast addresses, or the broadcast address. It does not
try to match addresses of other stations connected to it.

Do you have the most current version of the system level description?
The earliest versions were incorrect in much of their descriptions of
    how these stations operate.

The copy of the System Level Description I have is stamped "FINAL
REVIEW". The offending section is the second paragraph on page 3-4.

One other note...the document makes no mention of the redundant
capabilities identified in note 59.0. It does have a nice little chart
that could lead you to believe this but only if you knew what you were
    looking for.

There are lots of different versions of that document, all labelled
"final review". Please tell us what the date on the cover is.

One thing is certain: the description as you quoted it bears no
resemblance whatsoever to the truth.

Throw it away. That one is way out of date. I queried the writer, here's
his answer...

Yes, you assume correctly. That person must have an older review copy of the
manual.

It's being printed. Order it from wherever you order such things when it
comes out... (No, I don't know the order number.)
