FDDI -- MULTIVENDOR LAN INTERCONNECT
Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is widely accepted in the industry
as the "next generation" international standard for high-speed multivendor
networking interconnections. It is supported enthusiastically by system
suppliers, workstation manufacturers, network vendors, silicon chip
producers, makers of specialized communication products and other industry
players. Most current LAN standards are frequently associated with specific
vendors, whereas FDDI is a true networking standard that has grown out of
concensus.
FDDI is a fiber optic timed token access protocol operating at a 100
megabits per second data rate, or ten times the data rate of 802.3/Ethernet.
In development since 1983, FDDI is now nearing completion as a standard
interconnect technology in the American National Standard Institute's (ANSI)
Accredited Standards Committee X3T9.5 (ANSI ASC X3T9.5).
FDDI PROVIDES A TENFOLD INCREASE IN PERFORMANCE
FDDI has emerged as the one LAN technology that consistently meets the
latest high-performance networking and communications criteria. Client/
server systems, diskless workstation configurations and compute-intensive
distributed applications are being used more widely, placing great demands
on mid-speed networks. Imaging, graphics and database programs are increas-
ingly common, along with the graphical user interfaces that front-end these
applications. To keep pace with these trends, high-performance technologies
such as FDDI will alleviate the severe volume pressures imposed on mid-speed
computer networks by current and emerging applications.
DECstation 5000 FDDI OPTION
FDDI connectivity for the DECstation 5000 will be implemented as a user
installable option and will provide direct DECstation 5000 Model 200
attachment to high-performance FDDI LANs. The FDDI interface option for the
DECstation 5000 Model 200 will be ANSI compliant and provide a FDDI-to-
TURBOchannel interconnect. Based on the highly integrated, high-performance
Digital FDDI chipset, the FDDI interface option will allow customers to
build tightly coupled FDDI work groups of workstations and servers.
