984.0. "Score Card" by QUARK::LIONEL (Free advice is worth every cent) Fri Mar 15 1996 10:00

In my Visa statement I received the "Score Card catalog" which lists the
items I can obtain for "points" accumulated by Visa charges. I hope DCU didn't
pay anything for this program - it's a small collection of some of the
cheeziest gew-gaws I have ever seen. You need 1500 points (1500 dollars
charged) for an item that is worth maybe $5.

I was also annoyed by the statement that I HAD to provide my Social Security
Number when "redeeming" points. Thanks but no thanks.

P.S. I'll be sending this to dcu-net.

984.1"Points" not as attractive as cash back.SUBSYS::SUNDARESANFri Mar 15 1996 12:457
I wasn't impressed by this new "points" idea, either.

I have to assume DCU doesn't really want credit card customers
who seldom carry a balance. If this is a business decision
based on profit/loss, I can understand that.

Well, unless I missed something, there is nothing in the "Score Card"
program that requires carrying a balance. I applaud DCU for not discouraging
cardholders from paying in full each month.

I think this is a Visa-initiated thing, not a DCU-initiated thing. Not all
providers of Visa cards participate (I've now got 5 Visa cards and only 2 of
them participated).

If you read the fine print, the program is sponsored by Equifax, which runs
DCU's Visa card program. I don't know if Equifax requires the participating
institutions to pay for the Score Card program.

re: .3

You could say that this plan is a response to other credit card plans.
Many members have said that they do not carry a balance, but would
like some kind of reward from their DCU Visa card. DCU conducted a
survey of members, and also looked at the kinds of "rebate/reward"
products that are out there. Score Card was chosen because it offers
both airline awards, and also non-airline awards, for those members
who do not wish to fly, but still want a reward.

This offering represents the award program DCU is able to offer while
still keeping a low-interest, no-fee credit card program.

The airline awards brochure will come out next month.

Do you have strong feelings about this? You might want to wait until
next months mailing before giving feedback. But at any time, DCU is
interested in your feedback. Call the Info Center, or e-mail DCU (see
address in 8.4), or send mail to myself or any of the other directors.

Is this program still on? I didn't find any info. on DCU's web site. Is it
there somewhere? Also does DCU reports your accumulated score points on
Visa bill?

You receive a periodic post card giving your balance. If you want list
of the awards, just stop in at the MRO credit union office and ask for a
    copy of the scorecard awards.

I got the most recent Score Card flyer, and noticed again the "requirement"
for the Social Security Number. I called the Score Card people, and was told
that they use this to verify that "it's really you" who requested the
redemption, but that they in fact don't require it, "have no right to require
it", and that they have other ways of verifying the information. So you can
leave it blank.
