982.0. "Is there a way to get checks returned?" by DREGS::BLICKSTEIN (General MIDI) Mon Mar 04 1996 12:03

    Now and then, I have occasion I write checks that I would like
    to get back when they are negotiated. This is for various purposes of
    documentation and what not. I need the actual check not facsimiles.

    Is there any way to do this within the DCU?

Unlikely, the originals are probably destroyed after being photographed. When
would you need the original?

982.2It's the odd case...DREGS::BLICKSTEINGeneral MIDIMon Mar 04 1996 16:0919
    The circumstances are almost always unique and unusual, it's just
    that they occur often enough (maybe once or twice a year).

    The most recent case was where I sent a royalty check (from another
    bank) to my favorite musician and got it back with an autograph.

    I've also needed them as proof-of-payment.

    My "primary" checking account is NOT with the DCU, but I think that
    I'll probably switch over to using the DCU (i.e. depositing my
    paycheck there). The new incentives are just too good to
    pass up.

    Consider this a "golf clap" for the DCU. ;-)

    But... please get us Quicken users some REAL electronic banking.
    (Sorry... couldn't resist).

The photocopy of the check (front and back) that you can request from
DEFCU (two a month free, if I'm not mistaken) is more than sufficient
for this purpose in any instances of which I'm aware.

Indeed, I've never been asked for the original check - always a photocopy.

BTW, the last time a merchant needed a copy of one of my checks, I explained
that I charge a $20.00 processing fee for my time and effort getting a copy
from my files, going to the local library to make a copy, and writing a
letter to them containing the copy.

They agreed to credit the $20.00 to my account. In the end, they split the
$20 proportionally between two parts of the account, and only gave me $19.99,
but I chose to ignore the 1 cent error.

982.7Maintain a separate accountTUXEDO::FRIDAYDCE: The real world is distributed too.Thu Mar 14 1996 11:084
    We maintain a checking account at the local BayBank that we use
    only for writing checks for which we feel we might need the
    actual cancelled check. For everything else we use the
    DCU checks.

    Yes, that is probably what I'm going to do. I currently have an
    account with Fleet which has been my "main" account, but I'll probably
    reverse things and have that be my secondary account and use DCU
    for most things.
