| If it is adainst your checking account, theoretically the total
contents of your checking account an no more can be "charged" on the
Debit card. The money is withdrawn by VISA within a day or so. (I'm
not sure of the time between transaction and debit of the account).

| Means when they do a credit check in the store they can access my
account balance? I doubt. Some cashiers even recognize that this is a
debit card...didn't ask how.

| The cashier has no idea what your balance is - they ask the verification system
to authorize a purchase of whatever the purchase amount is - the system will
approve it if your available balance is at least that amount, or deny it
otherwise. The cashier sees only an approval/disapproval indication.
Sure, theoretically they could try to authorize a high charge and then work
downwards to find out what the balance is, but that would be rather obvious
to you.

| I don't think that the approval system they call know my balance.
Someone at the DCU here told me the credit limit on your debit card is
$10,000. But the person couldn't answer my next questions e.g. "what if
I only have a 1 in my account. Well...the person didn't know for sure.
I could try and go down to the local Porsche dealer and try to buy a
car on my debit card...but what do I do if it accepts the charge?
I'm a bit surprised that even though many people use plastic money
nobody seems to know how limits are handled. For example I once
purchased some furniture. The store did a validation on the card. Came
back ok but I had overdrawn by a couple of $100s. DCU then a couple of
days later sent me a nice reminder and charged me extra for doing this.
So seems this validation is some kind of humbug.
Now why I'm asking? Assume someone else misuses your card. I don't
expect it is THAT easy to make proof that it wasn't you. Until then I
have to pay the bills, right? If that's so I'd rather prefer a lower
credit limit which can be checked right away.

| RE: .5
I recall reading somewhere that the 'clearinghouse' receives balance
information as of ~5:00 P.M. of the previous day. i.e., if you use your
card on Wednesday night for a $500 purchase, and your available balance
as of Tuesday night was $100, your request would not be approved.
