905.0. "Questions regarding charges for Stop Payment Requests" by MOLAR::DELBALSO (I (spade) my (dogface)) Wed Dec 07 1994 09:30

How would we go about addressing a reconsideration on the part of DCU for
the amount charged for a stop payment order on sharedrafts?

While this isn't a "service" I frequently require, occasionally when a
check is "lost in the mail" (not rec'd by payee after a reasonable time
period, and not yet cleared), I like to doubly protect myself by requesting
a stop payment order, just in case it falls into the wrong hands and is
attempted to be cashed or deposited.

The last time I had this done, the charge for the service was $15. This
seemed rather high to me, although I must admit I haven't a clue as to
what it entails on DCU's end. Sometimes $15 is more than the value of
the check being voided.

Is it possible that this charge can be reassessed and adjusted? Does anyone
have comparable fees for this service from other financial institutions?
It would seem to me that a charge in the range of $2 to $5 might be reasonable.
With the charge set at $15, it almost appears that it's set that way to
discourage its use.

Jack,

Just a sample data point, the bank I used to use, charged $15 and the stop
payment ended after 2 years. Anytime they keyed in my account number for
anything, their terminal beeped and they looked in the message area for the
message.

The one time I had to issue a stop payment against a DCU draft was
8 years ago and most banks (my only other data points) were charging around
$10-$15 at that time. The DCU fee at the time was $5.
