899.0. "Why do people do it?" by MIMS::WILBUR_D () Mon Oct 24 1994 09:43

I see a lot of pain in being active in the DCU.
So I've been wondering alot, Why do people do it?

Why do members run for board and get on the SC commitee?

Do they get paid? Get good lines on their resumes?

Whats the motivation? Later to become a president of a DCU?

Idealism? A desire to see things done right? A feeling of ownership
that leads one to want to help fix a troubled institution? A feeling
of betrayal by those in power?

They DON'T get paid. For a financial professional, I'm sure that
"DCU Director" is a good line on a resume, but not for an engineer.
Nor do I think that being a CU director is a likely step toward
being a CU president, although I suppose it's possible. There are
some perqs involved that may be an attraction to some. But not
everyone sees the priviledge to take unpaid leave in order to travel
without one's family to a financial conference as a big draw.

I've never yet volunteered for the positions that you mentioned, but
I have invested a lot of time in this stuff, and the first paragraph
mentions most of my motives. Frankly, I'd rather go home and work
on my house. Others will have to mention their own motives.
Speculating on other people's motives is probably a bad idea.

    	Enjoy,
    	Larry

PS -- How about forwarding the base note to the current directors?

I can't find the base note, but I remember one of the G's
had problems collecting unemployment. Does anyone know how
    that story ended.

899.4For all the right reasons...ROWLET::AINSLEYLess than 150 kts. is TOO slow!Mon Oct 24 1994 12:014
I do it for many of the same reasons I volunteer to moderate conferences, etc.
I want to make the place better, I believe in the credit union philosophy, etc.

Dave Garrod's unemployment claim is still being adjudicated. He does
    have another job now.

    Re .3:

Dave Garrod sent me an update about him. Dave was working as an
engineering manager in Digital's IBM Interconnect Engineering Group
when Digital fired him. Then Digital outsourced the development and
engineering of the IBM Interconnect products, hiring EDS-Scicon.
EDS-Scicon hired Dave to manage the engineering development. Dave is
back on the Easynet at his old address, SMAUG::GARROD. Dave writes
"All the bureaucratic nightmares that hindered my work while at Digital
    are no longer there."

He lost his administrative case for unemployment benefits with the
Department of Employment and Training. To pursue it further, he would
need to move it to a civil suit in court. His lawyer thinks he has an
excellent case but isn't worth taking to court.
