| Suggest whoever creates the group come up with a better name first.
"DCU" is meaningless to 99.9% of those on the internet and many people
try to impose some order on the chaos that is alt. and will try to remove
or impede the group.

Take a look at a lot of the DCU material and you will see they use DCU
all the time. I passed on suggestions to the person, but have no
control on what comes out of it...
One suggestion was alt.cu.dcu... Once it has been done, I will let you
know what it is, though at this time, I expect alt.dcu to be used.

| re .2:
Also not a good name, since standard convention is to keep at or under the Unix
file name limit of 14 characters (between the dots). Another problem with both
this and "alt.dcu" is many news managers do not like "top-level" groups, better
to find a category (pref. one that already exists) so it will be
alt.<category>.dcu or something. "cu" isn't a good category, because "what's a
CU?" ("credit-union" might be good).
Also "dcu" may itself be a poor choice, there's probably a Denver Credit Union
or something out there that calls itself DCU.
Since the way Usenet works is every system manager decides whether or not
to carry the group the better the name the more likely it is to be carried.
(though some sites are on 'autopilot', they'll carry everything)
A group that almost nobody outside of Digital can see isn't any better than
no group at all.
Mark, please relay these comments to this person, or tell him to enter a topic
in alt.config that asks "I'd like to create a group to discuss Digital
Credit Union. What's a good name?"

...must be talking about a very old version of Unix -- every modern
Unix I've ever seen allows far more than 14 characters for a file name.
I just tried 120 characters on DEC OSF/1. Worked fine, mixed case too!

I've even seen systems running SVR4 with older filesystems that
have the 14 character limit!!

| re last several:
I realize that non-ancient versions of Unix don't have the 14 character
filename limit. But many do run old stuff on the Internet, and people still
cater to them, so creating a name longer than this limit will get your group
ignored and/or get you flamed by many.

I also realize that many internet subscribers are running old versions
of Unix -- the primary reason for my 'rebuttal' reply was to respond to
.6's "No wonder the company is down the toilet!" comment, assuming
there was an implication that Digital's betting on Unix was somehow a
grave mistake. And the fact that there was no smiley face included
with .6. :-)

Then again, we've got plenty of directors who can, but don't, access this
file (visibly and vocally, at least), so why not have it somewhere else
anyway?

| An important point to remember.
As of July 25, 1994, all Digital employees must be VERY careful what one
says or they can be fired like the 3 G's were.
A new rule from Digital HR says one cannot say much of anything during
the last 3 weeks of the DCU election. That starts tomorrow morning
after midnight.
For those who have external/non-Digital Internet access, you can still
use alt.digital.dcu to communicate about DCU in any manner that you
wish. Digital cannot control you if you use your OWN Internet link and
resources.
If you do not currently have external access to the Internet and would
like information on some suppliers, send me mail and I will forward to
you information that will help you.
Remember, this election is yours. You can communicate about it in any
way you wish outside of Digital.

What's your take on whether it is even OK to *read*
alt.digital.dcu during the quiet period using Digital
systems? Will the internal news backbone be blocking
alt.digital.dcu during the quiet period?

Personally, I doubt that anyone who cares enough about the enforcement
of the quiet period has sufficient technical expertise to understand the
issue, much less do anything about it.

A mailing list can be setup and probably will be. With that, you just
suscribe to it and when a message appears in a news group, it is
automatically sent to you. This would allow you to still receive the
newsgroup, even though the newsgroup might not be allowed into Digital.
