817.0. "Am I missing something?" by KOALA::BOUCHARD (The enemy is wise) Thu Apr 21 1994 00:56

    Am I missing something?

I see & hear a lot of complaints about how DCU is handling items
related to the BoD elections, almost all anti-current-DCU. But I'm
having trouble matching these to what I see.

I'm a DCU member with multiple accounts and have had auto loans and a
mortgage through DCU. I'm in the DCU branch in ZKO at least once
    a week.

I've never seen anything remotely improper. The DCU office has a
notice about the election, and a list of candidate names, but that's
it. The mailing I got on the election was as impartial as could be.
In fact the only solicitations I've gotten are for the set of
candidates who seem to be running more or less as a unit (3Gs?),
who set up a display in the cafe (which seemed odd to me, since I doubt
non-employees would have been permitted to do the same).

Am I just not paying enough attention, or is ZKO a non-typical site?

re: .0

Since my nearest DCU branch is about 1000 miles away, I can't say whether
ZKO is unusual or not.

Excuse me? You think a DCU "Special Bulletin" or whatever it was called,
bragging about the incumbents and how well DCU is doing, coming out just before
the election is impartial?

One thing you have to remember is that DCU and Digital have been changing the
rules for campaigning on the fly. This has been an incredibly poorly run
election, just like the one two years ago, and I put the blame squarely on
DCU and Digital management.

You've (presumably) read the stories in here about what
has happened at a lot of places. Do you believe them or
not? Did they really happen? If they did, were they
appropriate or not?

In terms of what I myself have actually seen, there has
been no clear impropriety (also at ZKO). Several times I used
the ZKO DCU branch, the candidate material
for Lisa and Paul (and someone else whose name I have never
remembered) was in clear sight behind the counter, apparently
available to anyone who asked. I don't know what, if
anything, was done with that material.

I think it is short-sighted to judge the campaign based
primarily on what you have individually seen rather than
what has been reported. The implication is that if you haven't
seen it, then it's not a problem. I doubt that you actually
believe this, but that's the underlying tone of the basenote.

Isn't this the point, if they had material for any candidate they
should have had it for ALL the candidates.

I'm not making judgements, nor am a naively assuming anything. I just
asked a simple question; have the alleged improprieties been something
I just haven't seen because I'm in the wrong place (ZKO), or I am
simply not aware of them because I don't see them, since I'm generally
    not interested in DCU politics.

Re: .2, no, I haven't read much of the material in this conference, as
I don't normally follow this conference. Actually I'm disappointed to
find that the members of this conference overwhelming support what
appears to be the same basic position, which means I've found little
    useful debate in this conference.  (Don't take that statement wrong;
I don't care if like-minded people want to discuss issues. I was just
hoping to be able to read some debates between both 'camps').

Your disappointment is understandable. Be aware that it is shared by
many in one 'camp', and is a direct result of the other 'camp' choosing
to engage in the occasional sniping foray (for example, see notes 802.0
and 807.33) rather than truly participating in a hand-to-hand discussion
    on the issues.

I think that what you are missing is the exchange between the lawyers
(there are certainly more than 2 camps involved in this) that must be
taking place. The only lawyer mentioned is the DCU's counsel, which I
presume is acting in the best interests of the credit union. I am sad
to see these actions. In my opinion, it does not well serve the vast
majority of the membership to have a legal squabble over the
directorship, and it's costing money, OUR MONEY.

Re: not knowing what has been going on

I would suggest that the best way to get up to speed on
what has been happening is to read the entries for the
past month or month and a half. If you then don't believe
what people have said, we can discuss it intelligently.

Re: good discussion around the issues

As has been repeatedly said in here by a number of people,
there is a great desire on the part of most people in here
to engage in good, constructive dicussion and debate over
the direction of the credit union. Unfortunately, those
who are currently a majority of the board as well as their
supportors are unwilling/unable to participate in here except
in rare circumstances (except for Keith which is another
topic altogether :-) ). This makes it impossible to carry
on a well-rounded discussion. I certainly hope you don't
blame those on the 3G bandwagon for that lack (which it
almost sounds like you are doing).

The setting up in the cafe was 100% by the book. Notice how the person
who ran it did not try to pull, catch your attention by calling your
name, walking up to people at ice machines, etc... DCU employees were
doing this at ZKO. The key is, the people passing by must show interest
and come over to the table and/or person.

Note that non-employees are not allowed to solicit within DEC, according
to P&P's.

The main reason why you do not see anything at ZKO is because actions
were taken to stop them when they did occur. It was pointed out what
was allowed by bylaws of DCU and DEC.

> Am I just not paying enough attention, or is ZKO a non-typical site?

ZKO has had its violations, but in general they have been taken care of.
