792.0. "A real CLASS act" by STUDIO::REILLEY () Thu Mar 24 1994 14:48

    Simply amazing.....

Mortgage fliers go out "presorted First Class" . . .

Car Sale fliers go out "presorted First Class" . . .

But a week after "the ballots have gone out" and I haven't received
one, I call and specifically ask for one, the woman at the Infocenter
tells me "the ballots were mailed out THIRD Class" and to just
"wait until April 1st to see if it shows up".

    Unbelievable.

DCU - you STILL don't get it !!

    > What is the deadline for ballots to be returned?

One would expect them to be CERTAIN not to have a repeat of the
last election where some people received ballots so late that
there was not enough time for them to return them within the deadline.
In fact I recall that at least one person who wrote in this file
reported to have received the ballot AFTER the deadline.

    What a class act.

At the risk of sounding paranoid I'm beginning to wonder if this
slipshod mailing hasn't been by design; the DCU is doing nothing
to instill confidence that they will do things right (assuming they
    CAN get it right).

I'm in Atlanta; the mail arrived before I left for my shift.....the
    ballot still isn't here!

give DCU the benefit of the doubt on this one.

RE: .5 This is, as best I can recall, the same way the election has
been handled for the last 12 years that I've been a member. This is
not being run to deliberately disenfranchise anyone.

observed this week, it does make me wonder that's all.

792.9They're "in the mail"STUDIO::REILLEYFri Mar 25 1994 22:2730

Well to cool the fires of WW III... my comments in the base note
were a commentary re: customer "service", not the election per se.

My ballot finally did arrive late this afternoon and Alfred in .7
is correct. They are being mailed out by O'Rourke & Clarke
Accountancy Corporation of Hingham, Mass using a bulk rate
metered stamp postmarked from Avon, Mass (no date though).

And the ballots must be returned in the blue envelope which is
pre-addressed to go back to O'Rourke & Clark.

It appears to me IMHO that DCU contracted out with O'Rourke & Clark
to handle the printing & mailing of everything, not DCU itself.
However, I am positive the woman at the Infocenter wasn't aware
of that because she went off to talk to somebody else before
getting back on the phone & telling me "they were mailed out
3rd class". She never mentioned O'Rourke & Clark at all. *I*
was under the impression, from everything she said, that DCU
    had mailed them out.

The main thing is they ARE "in the mail"... so give them a
few more days and they should all show up. Like Alfred said,
I think it's the 3rd class mailing that has slowed everything
down, not the DCU playing games.

792.10When does "lost in the mail" apply?SUFRNG::REESE_KThree Fries Short of a Happy MealFri Apr 01 1994 18:2012
Is there a specific time that I should panic because I still have
    not received my ballot?

I'm in Atlanta; has anyone else in this area received their ballots
yet? Even with a bulk mail shipment, I can't believe it should take
this long....Pony Express could have gotten it here faster.

Will there be some alternate way for me to cast my ballot if the
worst case scenario happens and I don't receive the "official" ballot?

Just got off the phone with Pat Coyle; she said it is definitely
"time to panic" if anyone doesn't have ballots by now (especially
if one would be so unfortunate as to get a ballot without the
    official return envelope).

Pat is a very gracious lady and said she would get another ballot
out to me by first class mail tomorrow.

I suggest continuing the discussion of missing ballots in note 813.*
It has a note title more in line with the subject of discussion.

-< The scoop; Postoffice will not forward them >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just got a call back from Pat Coyle (I'd left her a message). First
of all I have to say again if DCU does employee of the month or
something I vote for Pat Coyle. I have never met anybody more polite
    or helpful.

She is the person that ends up handling calls about lost ballots or
    ballots that haven't arrived.

The majority of calls she has received fall into one of two categories:

    	a) People received their ballot but threw it away. Now
they want a new one. She takes their information and has a new
    	   one sent to them.

    	b) As we know ballots are sent out third class. The post office
will not forward third class mail. So anybody that has a
forwarding address on file at the post office and the ballot was sent
to the old address then THEY WILL NOT RECEIVE THE BALLOT. The
post office just tosses them. They are not returned to sender
I'm not sure as of what date DCU took peoples addresses. I
           forgot to ask Pat that.

So bottom line is if you recently changed your address you won't
    	   be getting a ballot.

If you haven't received a ballot by now and you fall in category b)
above you should call DCU HQ and request one (1-800-DCU-TRYS). The
info center should be able to take your info, but if you have any
difficulty ask to talk to Pat Coyle. They should take your name and
account number and corrected address. Pat at 5:00pm each day then
informs the mailing company to mail out a duplicate ballot for that
person. If you don't receive a new ballot (that one is mailed 1st
class) within 2 or 3 days call back.

Remember all ballots have to be received back by 5:00pm 22nd April.
Note that it is the date that a ballot is received that counts NOT the
    date it is mailed.

    Dave
