779.0. "Another Confusing Mailing from DCU HQ ... Mortgages this time" by CSC32::S_BROOK (There and back to see how far it is) Sat Mar 12 1994 16:11

OK ... What kind of expensive Gibberish is this ???

I just received a mailing that starts "Dear Valued Member" ... in
a fancy envelope, with 2 fancy peices of paper in it that obviously
cost a pretty penny or three !

It is essentially a mortgage promotion. That much I can tell ... which
    offers $100 off closing costs.

It then proceeds to tell me what programs it offers ... such as a 1 yr
ARM, and a No Points, No closing costs mortgage.

OK, maybe there are costs on the ARM, but what use is $100 off closing
costs on a No Points, No Closing Costs mortgage ??????????

It then goes forward to offer the same offer to coworkers (as opposed
to co-workers ... I guess this means dairy farmers!) and family
    members.

Basically, the whole thing is apallingly written so as to be almost
not understandable. Then the offer is for a program starting March 1.
It is now March 12 ... well timed mailing ... I thought these things
should be mailed BEFORE the start of such a promotion.

Now, with the childrens' accounts letters that don't make sense, this
mailing that certainly isn't too clear, does anyone bother to actually
check that these mailings make sense ?

So, the Special report was on expensive paper and an abuse of profits.

The childrens accounts mailings are going to use up a lot of time for
DCU staff to actually sort out ... so this was a mistake that will
    eat up DCUs profits.

Now, this mortage giveaway, on expensive paper, that again isn't clear
is another waste of DCUs profits. I thought the idea was to increase
the capital ratio, not reduce it with this nonsense.

Sheesh ... what is going on in DCU HQ ?

At least they're saving money by not sending it to all
of us 'non-valued' customers. At least I haven't gotten
    any of these recent gems.

This is precisely how I found most of the communications about the
upcoming fees that were sent out last Fall. They were not well
organized so it was difficult to pick out the important information.
A DCU person on the phone basically told me that if I was uninformed
that it was my problem for not being willing to read all their stuff.

Again the tail wags the dog...

If you believe the information posted in the minutes and elsewhere,
similar mailings have led to business with the DCU (e.g. earlier
    mortgage promotion, car loan promotion).

I got the mailing and didn't think it was at all confusing (except that
fact it was sent to my 3 year old daughter). There were several
products mentioned in addition to the no points, no closing costs
product. It wasn't very hard to figure out that $100 off of closing
costs applied to those other products.
779.6new concept - morgages for kidsGNPIKE::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatTue Mar 15 1994 19:5815
I think I see a stupid pattern here...

My family has accounts in four names: me with wife joint, wife with me
joint, daughter with me joint, son with me joint.

Out of this, I have received one morgage offer to my daughter, who is
21 - not a minor, but also not a good candidate for a morgage.

Based on earlier replies to this note, it appears that many of these
    offers are going to kids.

Doesn't appear that this offer was well planned. Would a BOD member
care to inquire what criteria were used for the mailing?

Don't have to. It's all done via the miracle of "target marketing".
We have been told this is the most efficient (cost and otherwise)
    way of doing this.

I got one of these also. Even though I had refinanced through DCU only 9
months ago (sold to Shawmut). But I DIDN'T get a car loan offer even
though I currently don't have a car loan and could certainly use a new
one. I'm keeping an eye on my mailbox though!

But the good news is that this is the FIRST direct offering I have ever
gotten from DCU. After almost a year and a half of hearing about all
our mailings (at Board meetings) and then never getting anything, I
decided to do some detective work. I had my credit report pulled and
found out what the criteria used were and determined why I was not
    receiving these mailings.

There were a couple of problems, one of which I can't discuss because
it had to do with a glitch at the credit agency. But it was an
issue that would have applied to hundreds, maybe thousands, of other
DCU members. I have been told this glitch was fixed and the fact that
I received a mailing seems to indicate this.

And then there was also the problem that my closed DCU VISA credit card
hadn't been reported to the credit agency. See, no special treatment
    for us Directors. 8-)

The whole exercise pointed out the importance of making sure your
credit file is in order and that there aren't a lot of old credit cards,
wrong info, etc. I would STRONGLY URGE everybody out there to get a
copy and review/correct it. Also remember that there are 3 agencies that
you'll need to check. I'm going to make a point of checking these
    every few years.

Could you list these three agencies? I'm sure there are more like
myself who don't know who these agencies are. Thanks

And if you live on the east coast, there's also Credit Data of New
England (or is that "Credit dater" :-)).
