771.0. "Paul Kinzelman's Position" by ASE003::GRANSEWICZ (Candidate for DCU Director) Mon Mar 07 1994 23:58

[This note may be forwarded in its entirety to any DCU member.]

In some ways, DCU has come a long ways in the last two years. DCU has
made a lot of progress and is financially strong.

However, I have fought for and lost battles trying to position the
board and DCU to be closer to the membership, most notably in the area
of fees. I firmly believe that the board should take direction from
the membership, and as such, must ascertain the opinion of the
membership and treat the membership as intelligent grownups.
Unfortunately the majority of the board appears not to agree.

Furthermore, the recent Board Memo trying to explain the lack of a
bonus dividend for the members is completely onesided and contains
false information ("No fair way to distribute..."). I explained that
to the board but it didn't seem to matter to them; the Board Memo was
approved and published.

What I've seen over the past 6 months or so as a board member is that
the current board has begun a dangerous slide back to the
dysfunctional attitudes of the previous board - the attitude of
privilege and distance. Decisions are made purely on the basis of
financial numbers without regard for the membership. Consider being in
a taxi driven by somebody focused exclusively on the speedometer and
not looking out the window.

So by another measure, it seems we have come full circle in two years
since I participated in the effort to remove and replace a board that
had the same attitude.

The 1994 DCU board of director's election will determine the future of
the credit union. The lines are clearly drawn as can be seen by anyone
reviewing the minutes of recent DCU board meetings. As a DCU member,
you have the power and the responsibility to determine the future of
the credit union.

If the board is to ever return their focus onto the membership,
the majority of the board must become the minority because the
majority is not listening to the membership. This can only happen if
Board candidates Phil Gransewicz, Chris Fillmore-Gillett, and David Garrod
are elected. They have committed themselves to remain connected with
the membership.

Paul Kinzelman
DCU Director

Is it standard practice for a member of the Board of Directors to
    endorse candidates?
771.2CSC32::S_BROOKThere and back to see how far it isTue Mar 08 1994 15:512
Well, in the last election, the old board endorsed certain candidates
    quite actively.

You've served on three Boards or so it's been reported. Why don't
    you tell us?

What does "standard practice" have to do with anything? Whose
"standard practice" are you referring to?

I would say the practice is as standard as DCU's issuance a DCU Special
Report 10 days before ballots go out that features the current Board
(with 3 Directors standing for re-election). I would just like to say for
the record that as a Director of DCU I was *NOT* aware that this
"DCU Special Report" was going out. Had I known I would have objected in
the strongest of terms due to its issuance during an ongoing election.
It could have waited until after the election IMO. I fail to see
anything "Special" in the content of this brochure.

I haven't a clue what is "standard practice" for boards
(although both my wife and I serve on board of directors).
I expect most board elections don't offer the sharp contrasts
that we see in this election.

I do know that endorsing other candidates is the norm in
political elections.

    re: .4

Well, in my latest DCU statement I got a leaflet with a picture
of the "crew". It was nice to have a body to go with the bits and
bytes. I hope you aren't adverse to letting the DCU world "seeing"
    the physical you! ;*)

p.s. I *finally* got credited with the money that the DCU ATM machine
    	  "chewed up"! 8*)

By the way the election booklet that'll be mailed on March 17th will
have pictures of all the candidates in it.
