653.0. "Competing Visa offer" by AIMHI::STOKES () Wed Apr 07 1993 16:30

    Last night, I got an offer for a Visa Gold card from some bank,
    but I could tell that they'd gotten my name from the DCU (my
    town changed street numbers last year and my DCU statement comes
    to our old street number. Also has a middle initial of E instead
    of B.)

    My question is, why is the DCU selling our names to a competitor?

    Does DCU not offer gold cards (a product I have no interest in)?

    Are you *absolutely* sure there is no other place it could have come
    from? Maybe you could call this bank and find out how they got your
    name?

    I saved the offer (no annual fee, 14.9%, $6000), so I can call.
    But, I'll bet that the phone rep wouldn't know.

    I'm 99.9% sure that DCU is the only one who has my middle initial
    as E., it always sticks out (not quite as much as TIME MAG who
    calls me Maragert instead of Margaret). I even got a Home Equity
    statement last night so it was easy to confirm that they both had
    the old street address.

653.3Credit Bureau?AIMHI::STOKESWed Apr 07 1993 18:105
    I just mentioned this note to a co-worker who suggested that
    it could be one of the credit bureaus who got my name from
    the DCU then sold it.

    Sounds like a good explanation to me.

    Yes I bet that is the explanation. I know credit bureaus sell info on
    people. Personally I think that ought to be illegal.

    You must have been overlooked then, because I've had 2 loans with the
    DCU and, having just refinanced my home, got a copy of my credit report,
    both of them were in there.
