652.0. "It isn't so bad after all!" by CSC32::S_BROOK (My Renault has been I18Nized!) Tue Mar 16 1993 17:18
I am a relatively new customer/owner to DCU ... I transferred to Digital
USA from DEC Canada in January and I obviously needed a bank account here,
so I went, for convenience to DCU.
Well, I knew that this was not going to be particularly easy, due to
different banking regulations from what I've been used to and so on.
There were some glitches in getting the account set up ... in part
thanks to the IRS ... but that got resolved. Next came a glitch due
to a DCU policy and a mistake on my part in that I forgot to include
the opening deposit cheque with the application. With the assistance
of a supervisor, that glitch wasn't as disasterous as it nearly was.
Next, I applied for a DCU Visa ... and the people there were really
quite helpful ... they couldn't get my credit history from Canada,
and rather than just reject the application, they worked with me to
get it. One thing that really puzzled me though was that they insisted
on having a pay stub, in spite of having a copy of my job offer letter!
On the other hand they offered me a credit limit far higher than I ever
expected or needed!
The one thing that I have discovered about DCU ... probably because
they are a Credit Union ... and this also held true for "near banks"
in Canada too ... they do tend to follow policy extremely closely.
What I think one has to do is to be patient with this, because it is
actually a safety net after all, and when you hit a problem, coax them
nicely into working with you to a resolution. They seem to be willing
when you talk to the right people.
Overall, given my expectations, and what I'd been led to believe about
what it could have been like, I've been fairly pleased so far with my
DCU experience.
