554.0. "My first visit to DCU hqtrs" by ESBLAB::KINZELMAN (Paul Kinzelman) Sun May 10 1992 15:17

First of all, let me say that I am writing this note as one board
member. I am not representing the entire board nor even any other
member of the board.

Phil and I spent all day at DCU headquarters Friday (May 8). We spent
many hours talking directly to Chuck and many other employees, and
looking through lots of documentation.

I can say unequivocally that the level of cooperation I received from
every DCU employee with which I interacted was fabulous!
I think everybody's concern (including mine) was that the new board and
DCU employees (Chuck especially) would be at odds due to our experiences
since last August.

Fortunately, that appears to be all past us now. I
certainly was one of the more vocal folks involved in the opposition,
but from the level of cooperation I've seen, I'm fully prepared to
see the "events" with regard to DCU employees between last August
and the annual meeting to be merely a bad nightmare that I hope will
never happen again.

My goal as a board member is to put into place
policies to prevent such a recurrance. Membership involvement
will also be a major factor in preventing a recurrance.
I will support policies that encourage membership involvement.
Bylaw changes in the area of BoD term limitations and membership
involvement in approving changes to the bylaws should help.

Phil and I must have spent over two hours with Chuck talking about his
philosophy and goals for the credit union, his management style, etc.
I was very impressed with what Chuck has done since he started at DCU.

It may take awhile for some of his energies to achieve fruition.
Some of what he is doing may not be
directly perceived by members because it has to do with the internal
issues. But the overall goal is to increase your satisfaction and
level of service, as well as the satisfaction and enjoyment level of
the DCU employees. DCU must win back the goodwill and business of
the membership.

I spoke to Mary Madden for quite awhile too. I let her know that I will
back her giving out the maximum amount of information possible so that
if she must refuse a member request, I hope that she will give some
background as to why. She said she is very open to suggestions, and
her preferred method of receiving them is via interoffice mail. For those
folks who come up with and discuss an idea in the SMAUG::DCU notes file,
please have one of you write up the suggestion (just so you don't deluge
her with multiple copies of the same suggestion) and mail it to her (PK05).
If you include the names of all the interested parties she will respond
to all of you. That will get the board out of the normal loop, tho if
the response is unsatisfactory, you can always contact me (at least for
the next year :-).

Please do not interpret any of this as a desire to drop the investigation
into past events contributing to the fraud. Rest assured that my goal in
this area is the pursuit of the maximum return to DCU as a result of
the fraud. I also committed to letting members know as much as possible
about the myriad of questions we all had during the election. Bear in
mind though, that some questions may not be able to be publically answered
because publically answering some questions may weaken our case to recover
funds due to the fraud (which to me is a more important goal). I expect you
will be able to follow our board discussions to a good extent in the
minutes.

I expect the topic of recovery from the fraud to be one of the
primary topics for at least the next several board meetings. My goal in
writing this particular note is the desire to heal the events of the last
8 months or so and to redirect of the energy of the credit union
toward building membership goodwill, involvement, and business.

This note may be forwarded to any DCU member provide the entire note,
including the header is retained.

Let me add that IMHO, a democratic institution only works when you have
informed and interested members. It's our (BoD) responsibility to
facilitate informing you, but it's *your* responsibility to make sure
you are informed and to be interested if we're going to make this really
work.
554.2let's hear from the 'others'KISHOR::CYGANMon May 11 1992 11:488
Yes, it sure is nice to hear from a boardmember who's been at the home
office....but the board consists of MANY members, and we'd like to use
this note to hear from the others as well.

Keep up the good work...changes are becoming evident at the branches!

    All 2500 limits should have
raised to 3000 with the new rates.
I hold the NEW BoD accountable.

554.4I don't quite follow your reasoning here...VERGA::WELLCOMESteve Wellcome PKO3-1/D30Thu May 28 1992 13:584
Why do you think you think the interest rate should have anything
to do with raising your credit limit? Your credit limit is a function
of your ability to pay. If anything, give a fixed ability to pay,
if the interest rate goes up your credit limit ought to go down.

    Waaaaiiiiiittttt a minute here, guy!!!

You hold the new BoD accountable because you can't get your credit
limit raised on 1 of 10,000+ VISA cards issued by DCU??? Let's get our
priorities straight here! The BoD has got a lot of work to do on the
big picture. Why don't you try following the nice suggestion that Phil
gave you before you "lower the boom" on a BoD that is trying to deal
    with a bad situation.

Let's all calm down here and give them a chance.

    Flame off....
