482.0. "Ballot disqualifications" by BTOVT::EDSON_D (that was this...then is now) Tue Mar 03 1992 16:12

I wondered if it might be a good idea to list all (at least most) of
the reasons for ballots getting "disqualified" during the upcoming
BoD election. Just so people know in advance. If I recall correctly,
in past elections there was a high percentage of votes disallowed!
This would certainly be good to know in advance.

o If you vote for too many candidates,
o If you forget to sign the ballot,
o If you cross out a candidate's name (not sure on this one!),
o If your signature does not match the DCU's signature on file

    Can you think of others?

As a matter of fact, I talked with Patti D'Addieco about this very
    subject.

The most common reason for rejecting ballots is a missing signature.

My understanding is that the auditing firm will not do a validation
against signature cards. They will, however, pull ballots that cause
them to question the signature; examples given were: using a different
pen to complete the signature (ran out of ink); impossible date
(32-Mar-1992); I assume a large "X" would also be suspect. Pulled
ballots are given to DCU to do signature confirmation.

Interestingly enough, even in the year when improper instruction were
supplied (I think it was "Vote for four" when three seats were
available), most of the ballots were still rejected for lack of
    signature.

By the way, I offered Patti my services as a test subject for the
'92 ballot package; I figured if I could get it right, anybody could. I
    haven't heard back.

Home address. A lot of members (like my wife and mother in law)
    don't have mail stops. :-)
