465.0. "And then a chance to ask the hard questions!" by LJOHUB::BOYLAN (nuqDaq yuch Dapol?) Wed Feb 12 1992 15:20

Having proposed a pleasant evening chat with the candidates for the
DCU Board of Directors, I'll also offer something with a little more
meat - and a few pirahnas, as well.

How about a debate among the candidates?

This would be YOUR chance to ask the candidates those really tough
questions about how they would make the DCU a better place for ALL
members.

I propose a public debate, to which all candidates are invited. The
debate would be videotaped, and the tape distributed for the cost
of a videocassette and postage. The debate would be moderated, and
operate under rules established by negotiation with the candidates.

Going yet another step, I gather there is something like a "Digital
Video Network", which might even be persuaded to carry the debate
live to remote sites.

		Any reactions?

465.1Who would Moderate?LJOHUB::BOYLANnuqDaq yuch Dapol?Wed Feb 12 1992 15:2516
I decided this belonged in a reply, rather than my basenote.

I would offer myself as a moderator, or as part of a panel of
concerned DCU members.

I'm not wedded to the idea, which is why I didn't want to bring up
the issue in the basenote. I just think I could do a good job, keep
the discussion interesting and polite, and have a bit of fun (I love
watching people squirm! :-).

Another possible format is candidates, as a group, a panel of
concerned DCU members, and a moderator.

If someone like Ted Koppel showed up, I'd be happy to let him drive!

I think there are too many candidates for this to work well. Beyond
3-4 candidates no one really has enough time to answer enough questions.
And I think the potential for it you generate in to interpersonal
conflect is great. Perhaps if this were a normal election with 2 seats
and 4 or so candidates it might work. But I'm not sure this is the
	year for it.

465.3I think it could be interestingRGB::SEILERLarry SeilerWed Feb 12 1992 16:3815
Personally, I'd like to give it a chance to generate inter-personal
conflict. Among the candidates I think will reform the DCU, my vote
goes to the ones best able to speak and reason cogently under adverse
circumstances! And it *doesn't* go to any candidate who descends to
personalities or who expresses contempt for some segment of the membership...

Seriously, I think it might be made to work. The candidates could be
given a list of questions in advance, and each one could make a statement
explaining what they think and why they want to be on the Board. Actually,
with any luck that will happen tomorrow night. Whether or not anything
else happens at that meeting, at least I hope that I get to hear the
candidates talk about their views, intentions, and qualifications.

	Enjoy,
	Larry
