388.0. "Closing Accounts Gets Easier!" by DENVER::DAVISGB (Jag Mechanic) Fri Nov 15 1991 20:56

    Well, one change which appears to have occurred at DCU is a speedy
    account closing process. Shortly after the lifestyle checking was
    announced, I closed one of my checking accounts. I got all but $5.00
    on the spot, and the rest came by check a week or so later.

    Yesterday I closed out my RSVP accounts (don't worry...not much in 'em
    anyway), and I got all of it right away. I guess they decided it
    wasn't worth holding on to the money for additional time when the
    teller was perfectly capable of ascertaining the status of the account.
    For a moment the teller thought that they would have to hold back $100
    until a check was cut, but the branch supervisor told her that it was
    Ok to let pay the entire balance according to new procedures.

388.1You'll WANT to be a member at least for a little whileMLTVAX::SCONCEBill SconceFri Nov 15 1991 21:3111
Although .0 didn't say he was closing ALL his accounts, his mentioning of
account-closing suggested the following:

If you closed all your accounts when DCU started making it so clear it
wanted to be a bank, consider reopening a savings account. If you do
it now you'll be able to vote in the special election.

(After the pitiful exhibition at the Special Meeting, won't it be worth $5
to get a vote?)

If you know someone who closed all their accounts, pass this suggestion on.
388.2Will they be able to reopen?LJOHUB::SYIEKSun Nov 17 1991 17:1913
	RE -1

	I like your idea, Bill, but there's some note in here someplace
	about what a hard time folks have had when they tried to reopen
	accounts with DCU after having closed them (sorry, I can't cite
	the specific note). I know that sounds ridiculous, but if memory
	serves correctly, there was more than one person who said something
	to the effect that they were told they couldn't reopen their
	accounts.

388.3Reopening accountsCADSE::ARMSTRONGMon Nov 18 1991 07:155
    I just reopened my account...unfortunately, I thought I
    could not, so I did not do it before November 1. But Wednesday
    morning I wanted to see how the tellers were doing, so I gave
    it a try, and they had no problem. The tellers were great too.

388.4for XMAS can I have a REAL CU???CSC32::J_KEHRERMon Nov 18 1991 19:0111

    I'm glad to hear some people had no problem closing their
    accounts, I am stilling waiting for my $5. I tried closing
    it in Aug or Sept (it's been sooo long I forgot), I think
    I will use it to my advantage......

    I'll vote then I'll complain to get my last $5 (and I think
    .01 interest).

388.5Still here....DENVER::DAVISGBJag MechanicTue Nov 19 1991 00:4823
    Don't worry folks.... I (.0) am keeping my primary account open with a
    share balance...

    I have accounts at 3 other local Albuquerque credit unions, and when
    lifestyle checking arrived, it prompted me to check out other services.

    I found:

    Drive-ups open 'till 5pm
    No lunch closings
    Open on Saturdays till noon
    interest paid *daily* unless balance drops below $300, (Checking)
    no checking fees
    credit cards, atm's and so forth...
    And *THEY* pay a dividend when they have excess profits. (As in
    disburse the profits to the members? What a novel idea!)

    and More than one Branch in Town..

    Mary Madden told me......you better shop around...

    and so I did.
