323.0. "No polls in the notes file please" by SMAUG::GARROD (An Englishman's mind works best when it is almost too late) Thu Oct 17 1991 00:02

Please can we dispense with the straw poll notes. I for one don't want
to trudge through boring YES/NO answers or get them mailed to me in my
    nightly extract.

What I do suggest is that somebody volunteer to canvass for people to
    come through mail.

Ask people to send a commitment message that they'll come to the
meeting. If the sender wants to note in this message how they intend to
vote then that is fine but of course not required. In this way we could
get a feel for how many people will commit to turn up to the meeting.
Every so often the mail message collector could post a note saying.

x mail messages received ie x people promise to come to the meeting
    y vote YES
    z vote NO
x-y-z did not indicate how they intend to vote

    RE: .0

The message you ask for will be going out tonight, if I can get to it
before the sun comes up. I do not want people to disclose how they
will vote though. I don't think that is an appropriate thing to ask
for. They will vote their conscience at the meeting, where it counts.

I don't see any harm in a straw poll here though. Many people have
expressed disappointment at not being able to attend due to distance.

Okay, here's what I'll do right now. I'll delete 321 and 322 and enter
a new note. I will offer my mailbox (MIZZOU::SHERMAN) as a place to send
votes (YES or NO) and will post a tally periodically on a note. 321 and
322 will be scratched and I'll start with whatever's there.
