It occurs to me, today, that the DCU is taking unfair advantage of the fact that the DCU does not have a branch in the North-West. See related note about putting a branch in the bay area of Calif. I like having my check deposited into my DCU account, it is normally convienent and has been a comfortable habit for > 5 yrs. However, since I can't get to a DCU branch unless I go 1000 miles back East (Colorado Springs) I occasionally wire money from my DCU account to a bank in California. The cost of this transaction is $32. The DCU charges me $17.00 for the debit and my bank here $15 for the credit. Now, since the DCU has promised a western branch for the last few years and it seems that since a large number of DEC people live in Northern California that the DCU is obligated to provide some minimal service in the west, I am beginning to feel cheated that the DCU charges me to wire money when it is the DCU's lack of services that force me to wire money to begin with! I'd find a local bank right quick before *ever* spending that kind of money to transfer funds from one account to another. Why on earth would you want to keep your money in DCU then spend so much money to wire transfer the funds to another bank? Forgive me, but this seems ridiculous??

This seems too obvious, but... Have you ever thought of a DCU checking account? Then, you could write yourself a check to deposit in your local bank account, at no charge. Of course, you would have to wait 3-5 days for it to clear, but it would seem that prudent financial planning would make that a non-issue. Why on Earth are you spending such ridiculous sums to *wire* money to yourself? What about direct deposit to a local bank? That is quick and convenient, too, and you can still route some portion of your funds to a DCU account, if you desire. I think you are creating an issue by not using the tools available to you. Granted, folks on the West Coast do not seem to have reasonable access to face-to-face DCU services, based upon what I read.

I just call them up and ask them to withdraw $xxx and send me the check in the mail. If I call on a Monday, I almost always have the money by Friday. brian

The base note seems to imply that the DCU has an *obligation* to provide branches convenient to all DEC employees, or at least convenient to all large concentrations of DEC employees. I don't think that's a reasonable expectation. Besides, there are plenty of banks in the Bay Area that probably provide better service and terms than could be gotten from a local branch of the DCU. That's even true for me, and I work 15 minutes from the Mill! Larry
