222.8 | Watch out for phones that remember the last number dialed | CVMS::DOTEN | Right theory, wrong universe. | Tue Aug 21 1990 20:21 | 24 |
| I ran across an interesting problem a number of months back and I was convinced
that it was a problem with easy touch. I dialed the system, entered badge and
password, and started entering transaction codes and the like. Well all of a
sudden, at the same point each time, I would press numbers on my telephone and
easy touch simply wouldn't respond. After trying this a few times and having it
hang at the same point each time I called the DCU and insisted hey, there's
something wrong with the software on easy touch because I know my phone works.
Fortunately I kept control of myself and didn't start yelling at the person on
the phone. Since the DCU insisted the system was working fine, I just shrugged
my shoulders and thought "so much for easy touch".
Well, a month or so after this happened I was dialing on a different phone in my
house and for some reason it donned on my. The phone on my desk at home that I
use most of the time has this memory feature where it remembers the last number
dialed. Then I recalled the phone could only remember 28 digits (or something
like that), and guess how many digits I had entered bofore easy touch stopped
working? That's right, 28. You see, this particular phone I have stops sending
out the digits after the 28th, but it still makes the touch-tone "beep" noise
if you press digits after the 28th so it sounds like it is working fine.
Just a warning to folks who might experience something similar. If easy touch
suddenly stops accepting input from your phone it might be the phone itself.

Unfortunately, when I hit redial it replayed as much of the Easy Touch

* # at the "Enter transaction code" prompt does cause a hangup.
* # at any other point simply "backups up" one prompt level.
You can thing of * # like a previous screen (message) function.
Taking that concept one step further, what does "back up" mean at
the main selection point? What else but Exit.
Thinking of it that way you can see how * # is actually quite
consistent.

222.15 | DCU-TRYS??? | MONTOR::KYZIVAT | Paul Kyzivat | Sat Feb 19 1994 19:44 | 11 |
| This is a nit-picky question, but so what...
I always remember the dcu 800 number as DCU-TRYS. This is not my
invention, it was mentioned here long ago, and I presume it was not chosen
by accident.
But I never see it promoted that way, only numerically.
Given that it is a perfectly good mnemonic (did I get that right?) device,
why isn't it mentioned in the places where the number is publicised?

222.18 | The new DTN is causing a problem | 49234::DAVIS | | Tue Jul 02 1996 11:02 | 7 |
| I'm trying to dial using the new DTN from the UK: it doesn't work. My
guess is that the prefix hasn't been put into the phone system for
translation. Any ideas on how to get this fixed? [I mean, can I get
the DCU to ensure that the prefix is recognized everywhere, or is that somebody
else's problem?]

| I don't see anything about the new numbers that should cause any trouble for
a phone system. You are dialing the 508-461-6700 number, right? 508 has
been an area code for many, many years (and even has the traditional "syntax"
for US area codes).

222.20 | DTN, not full-blown numbers | 49234::DAVIS | | Wed Jul 03 1996 05:05 | 8 |
| Thanks, Steve, but it's the DTN that's the problem, not the U.S. number.
You can dial DTNs from any phone, usually, but other numbers,
especially foreign ones, are often restricted.
My assumption is that phone systems normally translate DTNs to the full
phone number. When new DTNs come on line, somebody has to do some work.
