202.0. "DCU loses it all - checks and VISA..." by PEACHS::BELDIN () Thu Nov 09 1989 17:02

Well for all of you folks who relocate in the coming months, a
horror story... Consider this when you move... Hahahaha...

	The curtain opens...

We notified DCU that we were moving at 2 weeks in advance of our
move (Oct 27th) and ordered new checks at that time. It has now
een over a month and new checks have yet to arrive... The local branch
in Alpharetta told me yesterday that they called the check company
and new checks would be in the mail... Meanwhile, I'm in Georgia,
and all my checks have my old New Hampshire address. It will take
two to three weeks to get new checks...

"New Hampshire?	What's that? I'm afraid we don't have a trading
agreement with them... We could accept it if you show a major
	credit card..."

	Fade to scene 2...

About the time that we ordered the checks, we bought something
with the DCU VISA card, and the store pointed out the fact that
the card expired Oct 31. No problem - we have always recieved
our card on time. Oct 23rd - no card. Oct 24th - no card.
My local branch in Salem, NH said that I should be getting it
shortly... Oct 25th, 26th - poof! Off we drive to Georgia with
no card. No problem it will be there when I get there. No.
Credit cards aren't forwarded. Where is my card? No idea. Meanwhile,
I have to wait to send a form that will get me a new card because
the branch in Georgia doesn't open until Nov. 2nd... It will take
two weeks or so to get a new card... They need the form signed by
me before they order a new card... Oh, by the way, the form says
	I'll be charged $5.00...

"Ah'm sorry sir, but we can't rent you that video without a
	major credit card."

	"Boss? I'm afraid I can't go on that business trip - I can't
rent a car or stay in a hotel without a card..."

	So....

	*flame on*

I've had to carry out all of my transactions in cash - not a
pleasant proposition when you are relocating. I've called people at
DCU and they are very apologetic, but at this point I just want to
let as many people at DCU know how aggravated I am. In this case,
DCU can blame the check company and the credit card company, but
in the meantime I'm SOL. Who is the person I should direct my
mail to? I don't want any clerk - I want one of the top people.
At the very least I think I'm owed a letter of apology...

	*flame off*

Rick Beldin (who by the way isn't carrying much more than $1.15 on
him because he's almost broke anyway...)

ps. I'm sure I'll look on this with humor someday, but right now
	    I ain't laughin'.

Well my Visa expires this month and I still don't have my new ones.
I've notified the local office and their supposed to look into it. So
keep an eye out on your expiration dates.

FYI credit card. If you ever plan on going from standard VISA to gold
visa, DCU's standard is to take your standard VISA card away as soon as
you have been OK'd for gold. It takes 3+ weeks to receive your new
card, so you will be without your card while waiting.

I was suprised and explained that I use it quite a bit and would be
hurting for 3 weeks. They mentioned that they do make exceptions and
than called the main office and made the following arrangements. WHen
teh new cards come in I must bring the old ones to the DCU office and
trade them in for the new ones.

The numbers are the same (on all cards), so I then asked them why the
big deal? Answer: We cannot have four cards that are usable
outstanding. They implied that if I lost number 3 or 4, that there
would be problems. My thought was the same thing would occur if I
    lost number 1 or 2.

I mentioned to the local DCU office how inconsistant this is and how
unfriendly it is. They were going to pass the suggestion to the main
    office...

    re .2,

Apparently that's the case for renewals as well. I was told by the
local branch rep, that in my case my new cards were ordered last Friday
(10-OCT) and that I should see them on the 23rd/24th. They are
apparently doing this for all members with Visa.

Is it in DCU's future to allow us to access our files
on-line. This would allow us to generate our own
statements at will which would be nice and could save
DCU mucho $$$$ in mailing costs .?

There should be no reason why this shouldn't be done,
since we can access a lot of info. now over the telephone
why not let us view our balances, checks cashed etc. at
will. Then if we choose to have hard copy we can print
it out on our home/office printers.

Today I find that the time my statement is run and the
date that I get it at my home is often too long and
requires more work to balance it.

I think the DCU's systems are intentionally kept seperate from the
Enet for security reasons. Like most commercial systems, I would
hazard a guess that their security is relatively naive, and would
not stand up to the hacking that is prevalent on the main enet.
Now, what would be nice is a formal mail repository for DCU on the
enet or even a Mail gateway. So that you could send them mail
saying "Please send me my current statement" etc... or even have
it as an option off the phone system. i.e. Hit phone button xxx to
send current statement to node address as currently registered in
        ELF V2.

There are a number of security/privacy considerations involved
here, but the technology is there...

	The following explains it all:

.0> We notified DCU that we were moving at 2 weeks in advance of our
.0> move (Oct 27th) and ordered new checks at that time. It has now
.0> een over a month and new checks have yet to arrive...

You expected it all to be handled within 2 weeks? 6 - 8 weeks
would have been more reasonable. Magazines expect it. My
MasterCard expects it. The phone company expects it.

As for using old checks, I am still using checks here in Colorado
that have my old Mass address on them, and we moved last January.
If I am challenged about having an out-of-state check, I simply
scratch out the old address and write in the new one. I show
my drivers license to verify the address and I complete the
transaction. I have never been turned down for those checks.

Silly me for not to keepping a close look at my expiration date...

There I was, Christmas shopping up at Pheasant Lane mall in NH...the
date was 12/02. I get to the register after a bit of a wait only to
learn the card expired 11/89. Lovely!

But in fairness to DCU, I did move this past October...it may have been
mailed to the old address. Neither of us knows exactly when they (DCU)
got my new address..

Anyway, the card hasn't showed up my place...or the DCU. So, we gotta
cancel the old card and issue a new one. I'll have it in about 2 weeks
from this Friday (they only order new cards on Fridays)...just in time for
last minute Christmas shopping..can you say "wads of cash".

Funny, this past summer I got rid of an extra Visa card not thinking I'd
have a need for two...

So, the moral to the story...check those expiration dates! Especailly around
Christmas time!

Cheers,
Dan

ps - I was one unhappy shopper this past weekend...ready to pull my "millions"
out of DCU...but this seems like a legitimate mixup that they couldn't have
prevented.

Haven't seen any replies about the $5 dollar charge in note .0, but I
think getting charged $5 to have my stolen card replaced (just
happened) was sort of beat. All my other credit card companies
rushed to get me new cards as quick as possible and for free, probably
anxious for me to start making purchases again.

$5 is no big deal, but still - did they really need the $5 to cover the
paperwork? Was it worth the perception it created? And it *is* a
perception thing - DCU Visa seems to think I'm doing them favors by
using their card. Competition wins for small things like that.
