157.0. "DCU Rates" by 33019::BAKALETZ (Mike Bakaletz NJCD-SWS 323.4079) Tue Feb 28 1989 09:11

Would it be possible for an entry in this notesfile be set aside to
list the current rates paid by DCU? I've called the Hotline a few
times but the recording plays back so fast you barely have time to jot
down what's being said. And being a toll call (I'm from NJ) its easier
to access this notefile than call the Hotline. Anyone care to
    volunteer?

I always thought that this was backwards! Less interest paid on
the checking account which requires a minimum balance of $1,000.
Not too long ago, the checking account paid more and didn't require
     a minimum balance.

The checking account (Share Draft Account?) used to have 6-1/2%
interest on balances greater than $500, compounded daily, credited
quarterly. When did this change? Does anyone recall receiving
    official notification?

    Re .2

That's what I thought too. As a matter of fact, when I found out
that the sharedraft account was actually paying more interest, I
moved all of my funds into the sharedraft account and just left
the $5 minimum in the savings. What this tells me is that I will
have to keep checking to see which account is actually paying more,
and just switch the money into that account. If I want to write
a check, I can still write it, and just do the transfer over the
phone or at the ATM. It seems like a pain, but if DCU wants to
play these games with changing which account gets more interest,
I'm willing to keep switching the money.

    Thanks Cathy.

FYI the rates are now being tracked in note 159.

I just checked VTX, and after finding the DCU page (not easy!) saw
nothing about rates. Are they only going to post them once in a
	while?

I considered posting this under 157, but that didn't seem to make
much sense. Nisreen, feel free to move or delete it without notice.

Cannot locate DCU rates in Livewire in Washington DC. It may be
a regional implementation. I cannot seem to get to GMA Livewire
    anymore either.

By the way, the rates have changed since .1 (according to the DCO
    branch of DCU).

157.9DCU Interest Rates NOT competetiveGUIDUK::STEBBINSGary StebbinsMon May 22 1989 04:1816
DCU rates are NOT competetive at all. They used to be pretty good, but
they've gone DOWN when the industry rates are going UP. As of a couple
weeks ago, the RSVP account was paying 6.3% (Annual yield=6.5%) and the
checking was paying 4.9% (yield 5.02%), with a minimum balance of
    $1000.

Dean-Witter Sears Liquid Assets is paying 9.42% (that's the Annual
yield) right now. I believe they only have a $1000 minimum. Sure,
it's not quite as convenient as a checking account. Minimum deposit is
$100, minimum withdrawal is $500, but I can write checks for the
withdrawal. That's the way I use the RSVP account, anyway. I intend
it more for long-term savings than daily use.

I've noticed something very interesting lately... The balance in my
RSVP account has been decreasing, and the balance in my DWSLA account
    has been increasing.

157.12I've actually found WORSE rates...THEPIC::AINSLEYLess than 150 kts. is TOO slow!Fri Oct 06 1989 14:006
I just got my quarterly statement from another CU I belong to, and believe it
or not, they have worse rates than DCU. For example, their money market account
with a balance of $2.5K to $5K is paying a whopping 5.15% APR interest,
compounded monthly, credited quarterly.

Well, I stopped by my local branch today, and I was thrilled to see we've
finally increased savings rates! Yippee! Perhaps not the highest in the
country, but they look better to me. I'm waiting for VTX Livewire to get the
update so I can do a hard comparison.
