146.0. "Service vs. financial institute" by SSPENG::ALINSKAS (DTN 223-5894) Mon Dec 05 1988 14:47

The last few notes have gotten to me. I'll try and maintain my cool. The whole
issue of DCU customer service is getting out of control. There is customer
service on one hand and the advantages that credit unions provide, like
competitive interest rates on mortgages, dividends on savings account, free
VISA, just to name a few on the other.

Opening branch offices in every rinkydink DEC facility (no flames please)
costs bucks. Who do you think pays for it. WE DO! I'd rather be inconveniened
a little in the area of having access to a teller to talk to and get a
higher dividend rate on my savings in return. DCU hasn't issued an dividend
bonus for awhile. I dont think DCU mortgage rates are that great anymore.
Working for DEC does not include the right to a DCU teller or an ATM machine.
If you take a job in a facility without DCU access, that's part of the
"job description" if you will. If you work in the middle of no where, one of
the disavantages of that is that there is no direct DCU access and that's that.
You can't have everything. I'm a member of a small credit union in New York.
I'd like to use it but its just not that convenient. So I joined DCU also.
If DCU is not convenient for you, do your banking elsewhere. Don't expect
DCU to open an office for you or keep one open 24 hours a day so you can go
to the bank 3:30AM Sunday morning.

Baybanks have ATM all over. They gave ATM cards away until everyone
was hooked and then started raising fees and minimums. Do we want the same to
happen to DCU?

What did everyone do before DCU? Do you remember? We used to travel to the
bank and stand in line! Use those bank-by-mail envelopes if you have to.

Personally, I'd like DCU to provide a service of sending a teller to my office
when I want to cash a check or make a deposit. I'd be willing to pay 50 dollars
for my VISA, get 0% interest, pay for checking or keep a minimum $5000.00 in
in my checking account to get free checking. Only kidding about all of this.

Where is it going to stop. If we wanted DCU to provide service, how much
are you willing to pay?? I'd rather have financial advantages, and have to
go a little farther when I do need a teller.

I think opening branches and ATM's (providing customer access) has become
a DCU major goal. Acting as a financial institution has become secondary.

I think DCU is out of control putting ATM's and offices all over the place.
The PKO cluster has tellers and an ATM in PKO3, and tellers and an ATM in PKO5.
The Mill has at least one ATM on Main St and tellers in MLO5. These 2
facilities are less than a mile apart! There is never more a 3-5 people
waiting anywhere whenever I've pasted by.

I was over at PKO5 today around lunch. There were about 5 DCU tellers milling
about and 2 customers.

Do we want DCU to be a service organization or a sound financial institution
providing its members with a good rate of return on investment?
