| I appreciate that the impression you described could be reached
from reading this notes file. However, I would like to caution
everyone reading this file that the respondents here tend to be
the more vocal populace of the DCU. While I will not disagree that
DCU has made some errors and in many ways does not always appear
to be responsive to various needs, I would be hesitant to use this
small sampling to extrapolate that the customer satisfaction is
poor. After all, if this were the case why would their business
be increasing?
I am neither defending nor critisizing the DCU. I am just cautioning
about using the DCU notes file as completely representative of the
membership as a whole.

Certainly it appears DCU doesn't consider us representative of their clientelle

As is DCU. (sigh).

Is it? Assets grew by 5% in 1987, roughly the rate of inflation.
Loans did grow by 28%, thanks mostly to the hot 1987 real estate market
in New England. Certainly, DCU expenses are increasing: up 26% at
1987 yearend. Yet, interest paid to members was up only 8%, and
that was on an increase in member deposits of 10%.
Yes, DCU infrastructure is growing, but are the owners really reaping
any benefits?

| I am not particularly thrilled by dcu. I'm sure there are better banks
and worse banks and about-the-same banks all over the place. I wonder why the
statements come so late and why there's still no magic money machine in our
building (18 months after I was told we're getting one). I get the impression
that their intrest rates on rsvp and savings tend to be a bit below what they
might be. But beyond all of that, I don't have any major complaints with dcu
and I'm willing to give up a little ior the convienence of having a bank in the
building that I can visit easily.
If people are so turned off by dcu, why are they banking with them?
Shurely there's no shortage of alternates.

As mentioned elsewhere, it's up to each individual building site
to purchase an ATM - DCU has nothing to do with it.
In regards to DCU growing vs. not growing, I'd think the fact that
Digital has hired *tons* of people of late (20,000 last year I
believe) would lead to some parallel growth at DCU. Based on .-2's
numbers from '87, that doesn't seem to have happened. Perhaps
factoring in the new employees, DCU business might actually be down?!

The LKG ATM is located opposite the guard station at the employees

accessible to anyone at any hour.

I wish the ATM in MRO2 were accessable at night...
It's up on the 2nd floor, and there's not always a guard at the
front door nights/weekends. I've had to go to Westboro sometimes
because the ATM isn't accessable...
Generally I'm not totally displeased with DCU, it's convenient,
my paycheck is direct-deposited, and I've had worse banks before.
I just wish they had more ATM's, or they'd eat the ATM access fee
for foreign networks (Non-DCU) transactions.

OOPS! I meant MRO3! And there in the last 4 times I went there,
all 4 times there was NOT ANY GUARD AT ALL in the front lobby,
this was evenings on a weekend. (Are they on break at the moment

leave promptly at that time. If you wish to access the ATM after hours you
must go thru the employees' entrance at the end of the building on either
wing.

| Most bank tellers are paid very poorly so you usually get an
employee who is worth what SHE is paid. I uppercased she because
banks like to hire women so they can pay them less then men.
The other day I got my supply of checks and the address was wrong.
I brought them to the LKG branch and said I would not have enough
checks until the new check books were printed correctly. I asked
the GIRL if I could keep one of the books. She said NO. I asked
her for a supply of window checks. She said NO. I said you HAVE
to give me blank checks. She said "I don't have to give you checks."
Another teller heard our discussion and took the situation in hand.
She took my misprinted checks to the back room and had a discussion
with the manager. She came back and gave me one of the misprinted
check books to use until the new checks were mailed to me.
The point I am making is the young lady making minimum wage
was worth every cent they paid her. This does not only happen at
DCU. It happens at every bank and "god help us" it is happening
in hospitals with nurses.
Take two checks and call me in the afternoon! 8*)

142.16 | here's why | REGENT::MERRILL | Glyph it up! | Thu Dec 15 1988 09:50 | 13 |
| Decades ago they used to train a new teller for weeks; today it's just
days. The reasons are (1) that ATM's are being used to handle so many
transactions and (2) most accounts are statement accounts (not passbook
accounts). It's a cost reduction thing, so teller's are not trained
in any out-of-the-ordinary transaction or problem, NOR are they
authorized to invent solutions!
In any bank, if you have a transaction that is not run of the mill,
just immediately request the head teller or manager.

142.17 | How about a commercial bank at DEC facilities ?? | CURIE::SRINIVASAN | | Fri Dec 30 1988 02:05 | 28 |
| With lot of reluctance I became a member of DCU, since I was applying
for the mortgage loan. After going through the hassle of getting
the mortgage, I received a check back from DCU ( refund of loan
application fee). I went to DCU to collect the cash. Guess what?
! DCU branch in MRO2 refused to cash the check since it was not
signed by the DCU branch at Maynard, which issued the check. I asked
the whether they could send it to the DCU at Maynard and get it
signed. ( It is not my fault DCU-Maynard did not sign the check). The teller
was very rude and refused to forward the check and insisted that
I go to the Maynard branch to correct the problem. Well! so much
for the service to Digital employees.
In the work place, I have heard lot of such horror stories about
DCU. I wonder whether any one takes these complaints seriously..
Most often we also hear the good old story line "DCU is not part
of Digital" whenever it is convienient to DCU. I am sure DCU
does not pay a dime for rent for all those free space and other
benifits Digital has provided to them. If only Digital offers such
facilities to a commercial bank, we may be getting lot more good
service than what we get from DCU.
WELL! HERE IS MY NEW YEAR RESOLUTION : No more dealings with DCU.
They do not deserve my business..
Thank God ! DCU is not in the insurance business. Otherwise they
will screw up the good service offerd today by METPAY.

Actually, I think DCU does pay rent. They probably also pay their
share of DTN charges. At most, they get discounts on DEC hardware.

Hmmm. You may have some suprises in store for you with respect to

The Sanders Associates HQ building in southern Nashua NH has a branch office of
the Bank of New Hampshire in it. Regular bank customers can use it without
having to go through plant security, but employees who are already inside can
use it without having to go out. They have two counters, one facing an
interior hallway, and the other facing into the bank 'lobby' area.

Well, I'm outta here.........
I'm changing my direct deposit from DCU into another bank account
I just opened up. I am also transferring all my money out of DCU. Why?
o Not enough branches.
o Not enough ATM's & too costly to use Network ATM's
o Poor service (in my opinion)
o Have been told twice in one week that their new check
cashing policy is "Federal Regulations." When I said "No,
it's not," they replied "Well, it's *ours*!" I don't
need lies and the policy is balogna.
o no cancelled checks.
o Ballot mailing fiasco
I think I'll keep the accounts open. I unfortunately have a car
loan with DCU. It deposits excess withholdings into my savings
account every 3 months, so I won't get an inactivity fee. I'll
just keep $0 in the accounts.
When and if DCU decides to change, or some of us get heard, I'll
switch back. I will still read this notesfile. Hate to be a quitter.
