Note 5.0 DCU NOTESFILE - POLL 20 replies

I would like to throw this up to the general discussion as to what
to do with the notesfile. The archived file contains lots of
information and responses from DCU officials, and it is now located
on BEIRUT::DCU_OLD.
The reason the file was archived is because notes from Feb 18,1988
wasn't backed up when the disk was corrupted.
However, I feel that it might be beneficial to continue with the
old file (as DCU notes file) rather than the current one.
The options are:
1. Continue with the old file.
2. Stay with the new one and archive the old one.
3. Delete the notesfile (if you think it is not useful).

Well, since I was the one who suggested to Nisreen that
she (1) write-lock the old file and (2) create this new
file, I suppose I should put in my two cents' worth.
I still think starting over is a good idea, as long as
she has room for both files and can make them both accessible.
We've learned a couple of things, from the "conference
moderation" point of view, on how this file works and how
its participants behave.
Some of the things in the old conference are out-of-date.
Further, things that are still relevant can be easily
re-posted in the new conference.
Starting a new file gives her a chance to set up guidelines,
rules, whatever, at the start. It will also give us a
chance to set up topics for specific issues that got discussed
in several different topics in the old conference.
In summary, I vote for starting over.

RE: < Note 5.16 by EXIT26::STRATTON "Just Say No(tes)" >
(Jim - why doesn't it surprise me that you are on the other side of the
issue than most of the responders in this file....;-) )
There is a lot of good, very relevant stuff in the old file. I
suspect MOST of it is still relevant and useful. I for one, am not
sure I will have the patience to re-enter alot of contributions when
the same topics come up again. The "OLD" file is only 2 months old,
most files on the net are much older.
In terms of disk space, bringing back the old file will prevent a lot
of duplication as the same people re-enter the same answers to many of
the same questions.
Lets do it.

URSA::DOTEN "Glenn Doten" 14 lines 14-APR-1988 00:03

Not to mention that the longer you wait to revive the old file,
the more new notes you wil have to incorporate into the old file
(should you decide it's worth it). Right now there's only a couple
of notes that would warrant moving back to the old file.
I get the feeling that certain people don't like some of the exchanges
that took place inthe old file. Don't worry about it; I think it's
pretty safe to say most conferences have such exchanges from time
to time. It's just a fact of noting. Don't worry about it. On the
other hand, if the intent is to start a policy of heavy-handed
moderation by starting with a new file, then I think you'll find
ever more flames than there ever were in the old file.

I can see how my note (.16) led you to think of this.
I didn't mean to suggest that. And even if I did, I'm
not the moderator anyway (just to clarify).
Okay, I change my mind, mostly because of Jeff's and Glenn's
notes (.17 and .18) (and not because of all the other notes
that were simply votes with no explanation). Heck, even
my wife Roberta didn't agree with me. :-)
