| re "don't blame DCU" What makes you assume the hardware was down
? You have the application program, the Comm interfaces, the
operations etc. FYI the Investors Services Similar set up for
checking on SAVE accounts is down quite often because they have
put it off line. The dumb device only tells you that the System
is Unavailable not why.

| Is it possible that they went down for something that would normally
be fixed quickly, but due to the holidays.....

Wait a second... the DCU always makes a big deal out of not being
owned/operated by DEC, but you're telling us that DEC is somehow FORCING
them to use pre-release software? I find that hard to believe. If the
DCU is using pre-release software, they must have agreed to do it, and
so it's perfectly sound to hold them responsible for bad judgement.

| Circumstantial evidence (mostly coincidence of timing), but
it appears that the DCU's on-line system ceases to be on-line when
they balance their ATMs (outages of ``only'' a few hours) and charging
interest on loans (daily, usually about 4:00 PM, Colorado time),
and for most of the weekend when they credit savings interest (try
getting through the last weekend of a quarter...).
So, take your pick: either an on-line-always system or interest
on your checking.
Yes, I agree its absurd.

| Radical idea:
Why doesn't DCU post (say, in Input/Output) that the systems will be
down during such-and-such a time every day/week/month/quarter/year.
This would eliminate the element of surprise/frustration very easily.
As I doubt many people would actually suggest that they buy extra
equipment to eliminate the down time.

| re .4
When DCU went to VAXES they went to an outside contractor to develop
the program for them. Their intent was to become an OEM for DEC
utilizing the SW that they had developed as the value added. That
information is several years old at this time.
Why not check with you wife to find out what the SW package was
and who provided it. They are generaly too conservative to try
pre-release Stuff based on my experience with them. I hope they
stay that way.
