This is an official response by John Tilley of the DCU. The portion of
that response, dated 23-NOV-1987, that applies is included below. This
response has been created as a base note because the issue addressed
appears in several notes (3, 15, 37, 44, 52 and 66). See note 2.22 and
note 2.26 for more information.

DCU OPERATIONAL COSTS: Periodically, references are made to the
"operating costs" of DCU. These costs ( $25 million per year) cover
the expenses of 25 branch offices, 9 ATMs, 220 employees, computer
equipment, data line leases, office supplies, statement generation,
telephones, mailing costs, etc. In addition, $16+ million in dividends
are paid annually to 75,000 members worldwide. DCU invests members'
savings in member loans and U.S. Government securities, for a
reasonable and guaranteed return on their deposits.
