64.0. "CD rates ?!" by REGENT::MERRILL (Glyph, and the world glyphs with u,...) Fri Oct 16 1987 15:49

    The Clinton Savings Bank is offering an effective rate of 8.25%
    for a $500 minimum for a zero cupon CD in a 12 month period. That
    is a darn good rate.

    The nearest thing the DCU has is a standard CD (you pay taxes NOW)
    for 6 mos at 6.77% with $5,000 minimum!!!

    Why the large disparity in rates and minimum?

    p.s. I did leave a message for John Tilley.

64.1HIGHER RISK = HIGHER INTEREST25217::DEVIVOPaul DeVivo @VRO, DTN 273-3166Wed Oct 21 1987 17:387
    I don't knowanything about the Clinton Savings Bank, but a few weeks
    ago the Yankee Bank in Boston was offering a similar CD. I heard
    a few days ago that their affairs were taken over by the Boston
    Five Cents Saving Bank as requested by the FDIC.

    The upshot is that a bank in trouble has difficulty attracting capital,
    and must offer a high interest to offset the risk.
64.2Six Month CD Rate57579::BAUMEISTERMon Nov 02 1987 10:035
    I found an 8% CD rate at the Heritage Credit Union, offices located
    in Pepperell, Ashby, Lunenburg and Townsend. The minimum if $10,000
    for six months. I thought this was an excellent rate.

Excellent - not really - but not bad. I just started a 6 mos CD at a
local bank for 7.9% (8.3 effective rate) with only a $100 minimum.

    Let's hear it for DCU! Back in November (note 694.257) I commented
    that I had been able to get a CD by mail for a good rate from a bank
    in Worcester. Then DCU raised some CD rates. The only way you could
    find out was by visiting a branch, or by calling the INFO line. I was
    depressed that DCU could not toot its horn, so some of the folks
    leaving for other financial institutions would take another look.

    Then over Christmas, it happened. I got the special limited time offer
    for an 8 month CD, $1500 min, 5.75% APY, with a _postage_paid_return_
    envelope!

    I hope everyone got one of these, so all can consider it. Something
    like this may kill the capital ratio. But once you get people thinking
    that our rates are worth considering, maybe they'll notice DCU is worth
    considering for other business.

    Keep it coming!

    :-)

64.9beat by a bank, yetNPSS::BADGERCan DO!Thu Jan 05 1995 07:443
    Not, bad, too bad I bought the kids CDs at a local bank:: $500 min!
    $1500 min still is against scum bag savers. perhaps aimed at upscale
    buyers.

    And how did the rates compare? DCU was "beat" on the minimum amount
    to open the CD, but were they "beat" by both the minimum and the rate?

64.11Not reallySSDEVO::RMCLEANThu Jan 05 1995 14:511
  Not out here. We have currently seen 6% at World Savings on a 7 month.
64.12Yes, but...GLRMAI::HICKOXN1KTXSun Jan 08 1995 22:1810

       A lot of banks are offering in the 7%+ range on 6-12 mos as of
    this week. With the Fed expected to raise interest rates again in
    the next few weeks the banks want to lock everyone in on lower rates,
    maybe that's why they set the short deadline. Haven't got my mailing
    yet, but think it might be advantageos to hold off for a month. IMO.

        Still its better than 2-3% if it just sitting in savings anyway.
