54.0. "BAD EXPERIENCES WITH DCU!!!" by 24698::ARRAJ () Tue Sep 29 1987 12:26

For those of you who do not belong to the DCU, I have some
sound advice... don't join! In my 3 years of membership with
this organization my final analysis is that they are the
poorest excuse for a financial institution I have ever had
    the misfortune of dealing with.

How so, you ask? Let's start with establishing a CHEF account
(which have now become RSVP). The person who first set up my
account established two CD's when only one was necessary. She
said my $$ had to go to the first CD before they could go to
the second. Hey, what do I know... I bought it. Some money
went to the first CD all right and sat there forever. So when
I go to migrate to RSVP they say "Are you going to renew this
other CD here or not?" I say "Isn't this part of my CHEF and
now becomes part of my RSVP?" "Whoever told you that?!", they
    say. Well, small mistake right.

Let's talk mortgages, DCU fans. How many of you have had the
pleasure of the mortgage department "mis"dealings. I applied
for a mortgage (refinancing from another Bank) at which time
I made an appointment with a DCU mortgage representative. At
that time we told him that we wanted to include all closing
costs (including the points) in the amount being financed.
No problem he says. We called several times to find out the
status of our application and our phone calls were never returned.
We finally found out on the day the commitment letter was
to be sent that we were approved for the loan, at which time
we asked what the current interest rate was. "Nine and one-
half", we were told. Great we thought...until we received the
commitment letter and on it was printed a rate of nine and
three-quarters. We proceeded to call the DCU to ask them
what the story was. "The rate was 9 1/2 in the morning", we
were told, "but it increased to 9 3/4 in the afternoon at
which time your letter was actually typed". "What?!?", we
said. "Sorry", they said, "but that's the way it goes".

A couple of weeks later we get a call from someone at the DCU
with a small question about our loan - "Just wanted to make
sure you were all set for the closing Monday morning." "What
closing, Monday morning?", we say. "Oh, didn't the lawyers
office call you to tell you?", she says. "NOONE called to
tell us", we say. "...This could be a problem, how much do
we need for the closing", we said, knowing that most of the
cost would be covered in the loan as we had arranged in our
initial meeting. "About $1500.00", she says. "WHAT!?!", we
say. Yes, I know what your thinking, but I did call the
manager and convey my dismay to him, but got no satisfaction
    other than "gee, we're sorry!".

I could get into the car loan - yes, we are gluttons for punishment,
we went to DCU for our car loan, too... but I don't want to
    monopolize this forum.

Bottom line is if you don't belong ... my advice is not to join.
If you do belong ... think about any experiences you've had
that can relate to these. Maybe the lower interest rates aren't
    worth the aggrevation....

54.1Another BAD EXPERIENCE with DCU!!!57579::BAUMEISTERFri Oct 02 1987 15:5528
Well let me tell you about my "BAD" experience with D C U!!!

I applied for a second mortgage three weeks ago. I wanted to
consolidate all of my outstanding debts and do some home improvement.

Along with my application, I wrote a letter explaining that I would
be paying off all my debts, etc. and they told me this would be
    taken into consideration.

A week later I called to check on status of my application and they
proceeded to explain to me that I had to many bills then I proceeded
to explain that I would be paying off all my debts. I had to explain
myself three times in this one phone conversation. I must say that
their Loan Originators leave something to be desired!!!!!!

Anyway, three weeks later, which was yesterday, I received a letter
saying that my loan was not approved because I had to many bills.

I was going to write them a letter, but why bother. I am defenitely
withdrawing all of my accounts with them.

I went to the I.C. Credit Union in Fitchburg on Monday and applied
for the same type of loan, same amount. On Thursday evening, my
loan was approved with no problems.

The I.C. Credit Union will be getting my business from now on.

. I gave up the refinance application last time, simply because so
frustrated by the " no return call ", even I left messages for many
times. Believe or not, one time I tried to ask simple question
at 2:00 PM, the answer is " ... must be at lunch, will return your
      call later ...".

I would like to relay a bad experience that I just had with the
DCU. I went to the DCU branch to withdraw some cash from savings
and to deposit a check written by someone else to me. The check
happened to be a DCU check. I later noticed that the balance they
gave me on my savings wasn't even close to the actual balance.
(I keep close tabs on my balance since about 3 years ago a large
withdrawl that I didn't make appeared in my monthly statement.
Upon investigation with the DCU, they admitted it was their mistake
and credited me with the amount). To get back to the story on hand,
when I questioned them about the balance being way off, they found
out that the check was deposited to the person's account who wrote
me the check, and the cash I withdrew also came from his account.
Fortunately the cash amount was greater than the check. :-)
The interesting part is that the statement they gave me had my name
and address on top of the statement but had listed his balance.
The woman who straighted out this mess explained that the teller
had started out right with my badge number but later in the transaction
had enter his account number from the check I was depositing.

Try this for size, the DCU turned down my request because the
credit bureau said I had A list with people calling about my
    credit.
They don`t want to know about your credit or if you can pay
    back.
They didn`t ask if I had debts or what I needed the loan for.
They said because so many called about me at the credit bureau
they had no way of knowing if I had lots of credit cards.
(They didn`t ask me,just said NO WAY.)

      Good deal..........gus

Don't hold it aginst DCU specifically - apparently, one legitimate
reason for withholding credit is "too many checks in too short a time"
THis happened to me once when I was shopping a loan around. I fixed
it with an explanation to the lender I wanted to use. I guess with so
many checks, you <could> be applying for 10 loans all at the same
time, etc..

I have to agree with 54.0 - DCU is the most unprofessional excuse
for a bank I've ever dealt with. My first experience with them
was an attempt to finance a motorcycle. It was a brand new leftover,
and I was attempting to finance it as new (5% down, I think). Well,
they called me to say the loan was approved, but when I got there,
they had approved it for considerably less. They then explained
that, as far as they were concerned, it was a used vehicle, & they
had altered my application accordingly. I told them that the simple
fact was, I did not have the difference in cash. (I financed it
at Bay Banks with no problem).. Now here's the kicker - a week or
two later I get a written response from DCU saying that my application
had been DENIED, with the reason being given as "unwilling to
compromise". I considered this the most unprofessional response
    I had ever seen. Any way, confrontation #2 . . .
Several months later I applied for whatever they call their
line-of-credit checking service. When applying for the motorcycle
loan, my wife was cosigning, so I included her salary (considerably
more than mine), and all of our debts. In this case, since the
account was in my name only, I listed only my salary, and only my
personal, or our joint debts (that is, I omitted debts for which
she was solely responsible). I received a verbal rejection that
same day, so obviously, the person at my branch never let it go
any further. The reason given in the subsequent written response
was "unreported debts". I tried writing a letter to DCU, and, of
course, they never afforded me the courtesy of a response.
My advice to anyone considering doing business with them is
"don't", for a little extra effort, deal with real professionals.

My personal loan request was turned down because I was not securely
employed, I had only been with the company 3.5 years. I told them
I didn't want to have a cosigner because I know I have great credit
so I went to my community credit union and had the money in 24hrs.
I only wanted the convience of having our DIGITAL CREDIT UNION
with guaranteed payments, practically, taken from my pay check.

I must say that the people I deal with over the phone for withdrawls
on my savings have always been polite and fairly quick. I haven't
had much luck with the loan dept though.

The hassel I had to go threw for a loan simply isn't worth it.
I applied for a personel loan and was kept waiting for almost 4 days
for a responce (most any place will tell you within 24-36 hours)
and I was made to feel that I was really bugging them after 2 phone
calls inquring about the loan. (it was rejected)
The only thing I have in this credit union is minimum account open
to cash my check thats all I need them for.
