19.0. "Debt consolidation loans at DCU?" by ECADSR::SHERMAN (You have *my* word on it...) Thu Mar 19 1987 08:59

Does DCU offer anything on the order of debt consolidation loans?
Anybody doing this? And, can it be arranged to have a weekly amount
taken from my check until the loan is paid off? Thanks!

Try the CRT5000. Can be good for up to $5000.

The idea of a debt consolidation loan is to get one loan at a low
interest rate to pay off multiple loans. The CRT is an unsecured
line of credit and currently charges interest of just under 16%.
This is higher than some charge cards. I would think there must be
    a better loan available.

If you think 16% is higher then some cards, tell me what cards you
have that is less/the cards I git for credit cost 18% or better.
Is Mass.A lower state on credit card rates?

There are many cards under 16% - American Express's Optima is
currently 13.5%. Some N.H. banks offer cards at 14.5 to 15%.

Mass is about average in limiting credit card rates - I believe
they may be near the top for oil company cards, for example. Consumer
Reports had an article some months' ago on credit cards - check
your local library if you're interested......

    I have 3 cards below 16%:

    	1) Visa from some bank in Arkansas, 11%
    	2) MC from some Texas bank, 14%
    	3) MC from a New Orleans bank, 15%

For information concerning institutions which offer credit cards
with low interest rates and those which offer cards with no annual
    fees, contact

They publish a monthly report (actually a one page flier) listing the
"top" ten in each of the above catigories. There is a fee to obtain
the report, but I don't remember how much it is.
