651.0. "Can dtfile be ran Standalone w/o dtwm and dtsession etc..." by ALFAXP::BECHTOLD () Tue May 20 1997 13:31
Hello,
We have a customer running a 3rd party X Windows environment that
provides a captive/restricted X Windows envirnment for user's that would like to
run ONLY the CDE dtfile application. The 3d party environment is by Sterling
Software and called CSC Environment. It appearently uses mwm and xterm and other
X applications they have incorporated into their desktop but does not provide a
GUI File Manager. So... the customer would like to run dtfile standalone without
running the total CDE environment, ie dtsession, dtwm, etc...
He has made some progress but discovered some abnormalities.
Example:
If he executes dtfile from a dxterm and then Closes the File Manager window from
the File Menu item, the dxterm where dtfile was run never returns to the shell
prompt, it hangs, the File Manager window disappears but the process never
completes exiting. If the user performs a <Cntrl> C and then in another window
su's to another user from root and starts dtfile, the File Manager window
appears but the user is basicly running it as root account and is fully
privledged. It appears that the ttsession daemon for the dtfile process never
completes it's process rundown and exits normally. Therefore, on the next
invocation of dtfile on the same display the user get's the same ttsession
daemon and it's associated environment.
So, the basic question here is....
"Can dtfile be run standalone without runnning the entire CDE environment ?"
If so HOW ?
If not - WHY ?
Any help is appreaciated.
Regards,
Dave Bechtold

651.1 | Not supported. | UNXA::DERZINSKI | | Wed May 21 1997 09:45 | 25 |
| Hi,
As you have found, dtfile will start and run, however it is not
recommended or supported to run dtfile outside a CDE session.
Without getting into a gory details, dtfile has dependencies on CDE
infrastructure. This includes components such as:
ToolTalk's ttsession
Actions Types Database; sdtdbcache
Environmental variables set by the session manager (dtsession) which
would not be set.
The reason for the odd behavior is because of the semantic's and the
intended purpose of the above mentioned components changes when dtfile is run
outside a session.
