642.0. " CDE hang when network is putting down" by EVTAI1::POUSSARD () Mon May 05 1997 12:25

	Hi,

	I would know the reason why CDE hangs when we wants to logout or login
when we put the primary network down.

	I mean:

	machine calls suprix and is attached to the primary network inteface
which is FDDI

	hostname command gives suprix

	machine calls suprix2 and is attached to a second network which is an
ethernet network.

	Now, if you are looged on CDE, and you do:

		# ifconfig fta0 down

	then CDE refuses to logout when you want to exit from your session.
No error messages anywhere.

	Then if you try to kill the X server, you find again the banner, but
when you tries to login to a new session, the screen is blue with the CDE
starting message, but nothing happens and no error message. THe only way is then
to reboot the machine or to do a ifconfig fta0 up

	Thanks to say me why CDE is hanging. If youtriess with xdm
environnement, it doesn't hang

	Cross posted in CDE and DIGIATL UNIX conference

	Gilles.

642.1One suggestion from a non-engineer...RHETT::BERRYTue May 13 1997 18:3916
    Hi Gilles,

    I'm not one of the engineers, but I have seen something similar to
    this. The case I had involved the fact that they were NFS mounting a
    system that was down. They would get a login box, but after logging in
    the DTHELLO screen remained for several minutes. The way we fixed it
    was to go under the BIND configuration and tell it to look at the local
    hosts file first, then go to the NFS mounts. Apparently, in this case
    CDE was "forgetting who it was" because one of NFS points was down.
    After it realized this, it recovered. We also did not get any error
    messages.

    Just a suggestion.
