2226.0. "Problem reading BIN HEX attachment sent from MAC" by 34071::ANDRES_B () Fri May 30 1997 15:32

    Using TeamLinks 2.7 a customer receives a message that has
    an attachment. The attachment has a format of MAC Binary.
    The message was sent from a MAC (not TeamLinks on the MAC)
    and BinHex was used. From what I can guess BinHex is like
    uuencoding. When the TeamLinks user received the message
    and tried to read it they got an error Document format not
    suported by the server.

    This was a WordPerfect document that was sent using this BinHex.
    If this same WordPerfect document was sent from the MAC using
    TeamLinks it was readable on the PC.

    Should TeamLinks have been able to read the BIN HEX file?

    Thanks,

    Speaking from a TeamLinks for Windows point of view, I'd would answer
    with, "No, not directly". The user would have to decode the binhex file
    to get the WordPerfect binary.

    Perhaps the Mac could have been configured to send through a gateway
    that would have done the right thing or something.

2226.2It can be done...WKOL10::STETSONThink Digital Software!Sat May 31 1997 10:2226
    re: .0

    The other thing you could try is get a copy of StuffIt Expander for
    Windows. StuffIt understand BinHex and can deal with it. Rather than
    UUENCODE BinHex is better associated with ZIP. It's a compressed file.

    The thing you will have to do after installing StuffIt is to attempt to
    open the file via TeamLinks you will be told in a dialog box that
    TeamLinks doesn't understand the file format. You then get asked (I'm
    doing this from memory so if someone on the engineering team sees I'm
    straying offbase here please jump in and offer corrective action!) if
    you'd like to associate the format with an application. You want to do
    the association to the StuffIt app.

    These are really rough directions, I know, but they should get you
    started down the path.

    I know StuffIt for Windows exists because I have it on my machine. My
    wife is a Mac user and StuffIt is essential when swapping files with a
    Mac user.

    Hope this helps!

    THANKS!!

2226.3Where to get it...WKOL10::STETSONThink Digital Software!Mon Jun 02 1997 04:3514
    re: .2

    I neglected to mention that the primary location to pickup a copy of
    StuffIt Expander is http://www.aladdinsys.com. This is the home page
    for Aladdin Systems the folks who brought us StuffIt.

    They have a number of other products which you might find of interest.

    I hope the above isn't considered "commercial" by the moderators. Just
    trying to point the base noter in the right direction.

    THANKS!!

2226.4MIME encode your Binhex and it will work.bachlr.zko.dec.com::manana::hoveyMon Jun 02 1997 17:323
Binhex is supported by the TeamLinks MIME and SMTP decoders.
