2222.0. "No spell checking of WPS in WORD" by KERNEL::BURDENI () Wed May 28 1997 05:42

    I have managed to produce what would seem to be a feature, though I am
    unsure whether this is a Teamlinks or Word problem.

    Teamlinks 2.7 and ALL-IN-1 3.2
    MS WORD 97 with Teamlinks Integration.

    I launch WORD. and do a File Open. I then select a WPS document from
    within an ALL-IN-1 drawer. This document is loaded into WORD, but
    there is no spell checking performed.

    If I go into Tools Language, the Text is marked as No proofing. The
    text can all be selected, and then set to a recognisable language and
    spell checking is performed.

    This is a reported problem from a customer, and I am unsure how to
    progress it.

    Any ideas ?
    Ivan.

Ivan,

The integration in Word 97 is ODMA based. So this problem is
most likely in Word 97.

Can you reproduce this with any other file format, like say
WordPerfect, opened from either the FC or DOS?

I just reproduced with the sample WPSPLUS document from the
local drawer.

Maybe it's because the TL ODMA forces WPSPLUS files to be opened
in read-only mode. (First TL converts the file to WINWORD6
before giving it to Word.) Perhaps Word 97 doesn't do spell
checking on files opened read-only?

2222.2Apparently this has been reported before.XANADU::cascobay.zko.dec.com::TAMARA::STJEANBob St.JeanWed May 28 1997 12:5118
Ivan,

I just talked to Carson Hovey, who's back from a trip to visit
the vendor who supplies the TL converters and viewers.

He remembers this issue coming up before with them. Documents
converted to Word format and given Word for some reason are set
to "no proof". He seemed to think the vendor had a valid
explanation for it at the time.

Can Word 97 change the text to allow proofing so that spell
checking can be done?

If this something you think should be changed, then PTR it. It
might be something we can't change.

Bob

2222.3A known problem; but I'll pass along this new info.bachlr.zko.dec.com::manana::hoveyWed May 28 1997 15:5826
This has been reported before and the last time I asked Mastersoft about
it they said:

"The reason for this behavior is that the document must be rescanned by the
application, similar to repaigination. Once this occurs, the "squiggled"
lines will appear under words that there is no immediate match."

I asked them how to trigger a "rescan" and they said:

"The triggering in Word seems to be the press of a button through the spell
check menu. This behavior occurs no matter what program generated the
file."

Their initial reaction when I first brought this up was that after a
convert, it's not unusual for some sort of touch-up to be required, then
you resave it and the document has been "converted". They didn't initial
envision a product such as teamlinks which is doing converts all the time
(as a reply to mail or whatever) where we don't want to go back into the
app. and tweek things.

Your comment about paragraphs being set to "noproofing" is new information
for me so I'll ask them why the paragraphs are set that way. Maybe "they"
didn't know about that either :-)

2222.4Looks like another IPMTKERNEL::BURDENIThu May 29 1997 07:5511
    Yes, the text can be selected and set to a valid language, though the
    customer that brought this up is adamant that he wants a solution. If
    it has been looked at before, I shall try some other tests and if all
    else fails then I will submit an IPMT.

    If someone does remember the reasons why this happens (if you come across
    them) it may help to satisfy my customer.

    Many Thanks
    Ivan.

2222.5The PTR is 11-3-881bachlr.zko.dec.com::manana::hoveyThu May 29 1997 12:4714
As stated in .3 I've asked Mastersoft to take another look at this given
this new information. Although it sounds like this is a fixable problem;
I'm not sure it's IPMTable until word '97 is listed as supported in our
SPD. Currently the converters/viewers do not officially support
word '97 so we're lucky it works.

Perhaps you can explain to the customer that the converters/viewers are
supplied by a 3rd party so IPMT's do not have the same effect. It's not
just a matter of someone at Digital staying late some night to fix a bug.

2222.6Reproducable in WORD 7KERNEL::BURDENIFri May 30 1997 08:0211
    Thanks for that, most helpful,

    	I am also able to reproduce this problem in Word 7, in exactly the
    same manner, would this still be a Mastersoft problem ?

    I am also getting a problem when I do an INSERT FILE and select a WPS
    document, this just gives me garbage (also in Word 7).

    Could this be related ?

    Ivan.
2222.7Might just be a different bug.XANADU::cascobay.zko.dec.com::TAMARA::STJEANBob St.JeanMon Jun 02 1997 10:1915

I don't think they are necessarily related. If Insert File isn't
working then it might be different bug. You should PTR it.
