2074.0. "Spell Checker seems slow..." by CHOWDA::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Wed Mar 19 1997 12:15

    Customer conveyed this to me this morning. A manager was in TeamLinks
    2.7 and using the Spell Checker found that the words displayed back
    very slowly. Note this is a Pentium 133 running Windows95 w 32 MEG
    of memory. At the time no other applications were running. Other
    Windows 95, Anti-virus and TeamLinks. No one users seemed to experience
    a slow down while even doing spell checking. I tried on a 486
    66 with 32 MEG running Windows NT 4.0 and TeamLinks 2.7 and it was
    fine. Other applications on her PC were checked (WORD, EXCEL) and they
    seemed to function at a reasonably good speed. This user with the
    problem first noticed this today. Yesterday it was fine. At it
    seems constant. A reboot was done and it still was slow in the Spell
    Checker.

    We were wondering if this user might have added in so many words
    into her personal dictionary that is where the slow down is.

    Can someone comment?

Does any other part of TL run slowly? Is it possible that TRACE
logging is enabled on that PC? Not sure if that would effect the
Spell Checker, but it would slow down TL in general.

Logging is controlled by the CfcLogOptions entry in the [TeamLinks]
section of Office.ini. If one of the tokens in there is TRACE, then
TL will run slower. Remove it to disable trace logging.

2074.2Alas, no data on that...but easy to test, here's howMANANA::HOVEYWed Mar 19 1997 13:0514
I don't have any performance information for you on personal dictionary size;
but it would be quick and easy to test this.

Go into the create message window: Options-->Spell Check options. Change the
personal dictionary file to something else. See if the checker runs faster with
the empty pd. You might give the pd file a quick edit and find out how many
words are in there. Seems to me the expected design is around 100 or so.

The TeamLinks 3.0 EFT2 is supposed to have a newer version of the spell
checker. Although primarily just an update of the dictionaries, I think
something was said about performance improvements for large pd's. I haven't
gotten any feedback on the use of pd's with teamlinks so I didn't pay much
attention.
