2011.0. "Lost MP, NX and ST files - Fix?" by BEORN::MACK () Tue Feb 25 1997 07:31

    I hope we have a fix for this: one of my customer lost the
    three index files (MP, NX and ST) of his local file cabinet...
    Is there a way to rebuild them? All the mails are there
    (*.X4H, *.001, *.002, etc...).

    I tried the file cabinet repair with TL 2.7 but when the index
    files are not present it just says "Cannot find drawer" and stops.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks, Bruno.

2011.1I think you are out of luckAIMTEC::GIANNETTI_DTue Feb 25 1997 11:0516
    Bruno,

    The MP, NX and ST files together make up the index files necessary
    for a local file cabinet. You have no method of rebuilding those
    files to my knowledge. Whey you are running the file cabinet repair
    it is first attempting to clean those files (in hopes that this is
    the location of the problem), then it goes on to repair further
    (such as file headers, etc) at least this is my understanding of
    how the fix works. If those files are not present - you cannot
    begin to fix the problem.

    Does the customer have a backup copy of the file cabinet where these
    files possible reside?

2011.2Backup? What backup? ;-)BEORN::MACKWed Feb 26 1997 03:325
    Of course no backup at all...

    Thanks for your answer.

    Cheers, Bruno.
2011.3Can still be recovered. XANADU::x400it.zko.dec.com::xanadu::ROUGHTWed Feb 26 1997 08:558
You can work around the loss of the index files somewhat.
Before running the cabinet repair utility, create a new drawer
in the same directory as the lost drawer. Then repair the
new drawer whith the import orphan option. This will bring
all of the documents from the old drawer into the new drawer.
All folder information will be lost however.
