2235.0. "Towing a Dingy" by MUZICK::THOMPSON (Mike LMO2-1/M13) Wed Aug 23 1995 10:56

I have had problems with towing a solid 9 foot dingy.
(Culminating in the towing eye being torn out one stormy
	day and the dingy lost!)

	POLYETHYLENE LINE
I generally tow the dingy sufficiently far behind so it is
climbing the wave that follows the stern. However in confused seas
or when running, the dingy often surfs down a wave and the painter
goes slack. Then the dingy falls back and suddenly the painter
goes tight with a jarring crack!

However the polyethyline line does float.

	NYLON LINE
The nylon line is elastic and so the jarring effect of
towing the dingy through a confused sea is much reduced.

However the nylon line does not float. Forgetful people
like me will at some time fail to have the dingy on a short painter
when necessary to prevent the nylon line getting into the prop.
It will do so in the most embarasing situations such
	as approaching the dock!

	SOLUTION
I use both 3/8 inch yellow polyethyline and a 1/4 inch nylon.
The nylon painter is shorter and wound around the poly line.
The combination floats! The towing is quiet smooth with the
nylon line taut and the polyline a little loose.

This won't suit all towing situations but I hope it may
	help some reader.

Why doesn't *somebody* sell nylon line that floats?? How hard could this
be?
