The Italian team of Capricorno, Brava Q8 ( ILC 40 ) and Mumm a Mia ( Mumm 36 )
won the Admirals cup for the first time.

The Americans ( Blue Yankee, Pigs in Space + a Mumm - can't remember the name )
were favourites before the championship, and even more so before the Fastnet, as
they held a convincing lead over the Italians following a strong showing in the
inshores and the Channel Race. The expected German challenge failed to
materialise.

However, the Americans didn't find the very light going in the Fastnet to their
liking and carelessly failed to cover the Italians finishing well down the fleet
in all 3 classes. The Italians went on to win the ILC40 and Mumm class, with a
third in the Big boat class.

The British showing was, as expected, dismal, with the only higlight being their
big boat, a last minute charter from the Germans, winning their class in the
Fastnet, but this wasn't enough to pull them out of 8th ( and last ) place.

This years Fastnet was dominated by light winds, as a high pressure system
followed the boats down the channel for the first half of the race. The first
Admirals cup boat took 4 days and 8 hours. When I did the race in 1987, it took
us 4 days 22hours in a 30 footer. Some of the smaller boats will still be out
after 7 days. The ex-Whitbread Maxi Nicorette managed to stay ahead of the High
and finished close to the race record of 2� days. I assume they were the overall
winner.
