Provisional course details for the 1997 Whitbread race were announced yesterday.

There are several new, shorter legs, and Cape Town returns as the first port of 
call. The course is a little shorter than the last race.

Leg 1 - Southampton to Cape Town
Leg 2 - Cape Town to Fremantle
Leg 3 - Fremantle to Melbourne
Leg 4 - Melbourne to Auckland
Leg 5 - Auckland to South America Somewhere
Leg 6 - South America to Fort Lauderdale
Leg 7 - Fort Lauderdale to Baltimore ( provisional ) 
Leg 8 - Baltimore to France somewhere
Leg 9 - France to Southampton
