2167.0. "Fare-thee-well, sailors" by 56945::CLAFLIN () Tue Sep 20 1994 17:16
My last day is this Friday, unless someone hires this poor contractor.
I have been here for two years now. Needless to say, the Sailing notes
file is one of the biggest things I will mess.
Most of you I have never met. All of you have helped me learn a great
deal about this wonderful sport.
Some names spring to mind, in no particular order:
KALINOWSKI John, I enjoy your entries, even though you bought the P26 I
had taken an interest in.
Hill Phil, Though I am currently planning on moving back to Colorado,
rest assurred that Holiday II will continue on at Manchester for as
long as Dick Ashenden is here. Your response to my search for the
perfect cruiser, lead me to Holiday II, and a friendship with two
"old men of the sea", Dick and Sam. The B30's of these two should
not be sperated.
Ktistakis Mike For those who do know Mike, he is a charactor worth the
time. I acted as crew on his boat out to Cuttyhunk last year. His
energy is as infectious as his heart is generous.
Berens, Alan It is hard to express my thanks for the work you have
done on this conference over the years. Of all the notes
conferences I have seen at Digital, this is one of the most active,
best organized, and friendly ones there is. You are truely a
benevelant dictator. Keep up the good work.
As a contributor, I have found your conservative voice based on
well thought out consideration. Most of you do not know how
helpful Alan is. He sent me a copy of an article on teak deck
repair just because he knew it would help me. Unfortunately, I am
going to have to try to use this information this fall.
Sears, Paul I know I did not buy your 26' sloop from you. Sorry about
that. Still, your entries on electronics/internet have found
their way to har copy at my home. I hope your contracts with
Digital continue strong and lasting.
Francey, Ron You sold out of the ocean and went forward to a new career
in the interior of America. I wish to thank you, post departure,
for your entries and almost for Ying Yang.
Ho, Gene We actually met briefly at the Boxborough Host a year ago.
Bates, Ken Ken and I actually worked together years ago. Who knows we
may again in the future. If I am in Colorado, you are invited to
join me on Pueblo Resevoir.
French, Bill You give a a consistent arguement for small is good.
To all of you, thanks for the notes, e-mail, and phone calls. I live
just 1.5 miles from the Boxborough Host. Anyone up for the Southern
Cross video at my place some evening?

| Best wishes, Doug.
Your compliment reminded me that I have not published my "3 weeks on and
around Penobscot Bay on a 19' boat in August of '94" account.

| Well, I'm back.
I am definately high and dry. I started working at Colorado this week.
6,000 feet high and not an ocean in sight.
I am glad to hear that Mike K is off with Teliba.
I have some final cruises that I will add to note 2141.
Holiday II is alseep for the winter. This spring and summer whe will
sail again.

2167.3 | The yo yo is headed down once more | TINCUP::CLAFLIN | | Tue Aug 08 1995 13:08 | 28 |
| Once again I am cast conrtractless upon the waters. Today is my last day.
Hopefully I will receive another contract with Digital in the future. In the
meantime, I am afraid that Holiday II once more goes on the inactive list.
The good news is that I am leaving on a train tomorrow night, headed for Boston.
I arrive in Boston on Friday. If things go well, Holiday II is headed down
east for two short weeks starting Sunday. Since we are light on crew, Amy
and I will change our desitinations slightly. Sunday night should be Ilse of
Shoals. We may not even make it to Casco on Monday. Heck we are cruising.
As Alan has remarked, destinations count, not schedules.
Anyone who is out there, watch for us. Holiday II looks like a wood boat with
wood spars. I think the sail number is B30 1407. We tow our dingy. We sail
the Manchester Harbor Boat Club burgee. Vistors are welcome. Jessica( who
turns 4 on the water) has yet to met a stranger.
Digital has meant many things to me over the years, but this notes file is
clearly one of the most important.
Keep in touch, I am on CompuServ (have no idea as to the account). If the
firewall will let me, I will send in an account of the trip in September.
Of course any and all job leads aree welcome.

2167.4 | Un - fare thee well, I'm back | DECC::CLAFLIN | | Mon Mar 04 1996 16:33 | 15 |
| I just started a new contract at ZKO.
Amy is studying for her Phd qualifier in Colorado Springs. Jessica is skiing with her. I am currently looking
for an apartment in NH.
I am busy learning how Unix is net worked with VMS etc here. So I can not even begin to tellyou what I am
supposed to be doing. Back on a major learning curve.
I stopped by to look at Holiday II in the yard. Storm covers are still in place and tight. Another month or so,
and I can start working on her. Without the family for a distraction, I can get an awful lot of improvements into
her this year.
Hope to see you in and about the water off of Manchester-by-the-Sea.
