2162.0. "foul odor permeated hose" by DVOPAS::PINHI::Chapiewsky () Thu Sep 01 1994 12:43

I have a condition on my boat that was caused by improper pumping of the
black water holding tank contents. The marina where I keep my boat does
not have adequate suction to completely empty the contents of my holding
tank (holding tank for the head that is). My dilemma is one that the
foul odor has permeated the 2" ID rubber hose from the head to the tank,
and from the tank to the deck (up to where the waste deck plate is
located). My question is - how do I get this smell out of the rubber
line without replacing the hose (unless I get a volunteer to replace it,
if I supply the hose). Items to consider:

1) I have had the problem for two motnhs now and although it is getting
better, it still smells very bad in the compartments where the rubber
hose runs through.
2) I have let the tank, and hose, sit filled wih water mixed with bleach
for two weeks.
3) I have tried pumping the system with white vinegar.
4) I took everything out of the boat and extensively cleaned every bilge,
the head, and even the exterior of the holding tank and assorted hoses.
5) I am getting extremely irritated with this lingering smell and will
replace the line (after the season is over) only if I cannot rid the hose
of this "odiferous emmination".

Any suggestions tht have WORKED for you or others in the past?

You'll probably have to replace the hose.

-< foul odor permeated hose >-

I bought an '84 Hunter 34 this past spring that had a full holding tank.
The boat had not been used for about a year ...

After wrestling with deodorants and cleaners and copious irrigation, I
finally settled upon the obvious - all hoses had to be replaced! From
the head to the holding tank, from the holding tank to the discharge
pump, from the pump to the thru-hole, from the tank to the pump-out
cap, as well as the holding tank breather hose; I replaced the lot.

The problem was the poor quality of the original hose, the age of the hose,
and of course the length of time the mess went unattended.

My .02 is to spend the money to get good hose and do the nasty work -
the sweet smell of success will be worth it.

Keith
