Subj: RE: Melges 24
John,
Your note is write locked due to your failure to comply with the
rules of the sailing notes file. But here is the answer:
Melges Boat Works
Zenda WI
414-248-6621
414-275-8012 FAX
In Canada the dealer is:
FOGH Marine
Toronto, Canada
416-259-9644
The boats are fairly expensive I have not priced one but I have
heard that they are about $35K ready to race. That is a full set of
sails, and a trailor. Wish it was not so expensive......

REAL impressive. The Sturgis-sponsored boat (dealership on the
Cape) planed below us (Pearson 33 woof woof arf) in the Figawi. A J105
came by something like 10 minutes behind! Fast boats, in the Aussie18
style.. sort of.
The writer for the Globe costed one out at $US40K... eek! Maybe
wait awhile until there are used models around... or bite the bullet
and say goodbye to the fleet! John Collins, the US PHRF handicapper,
has had one hell of a time putting a number to them. As a conequence,
they have been kicking butt, especially around Buzzard's Bay. Most race
committes are trying to get then into their own fleet.
I watched the Sturgis crew prepare- their gearbags could fit in
your shirt pocket. This baby wants to run lean.
Fun stuff.

2158.4 | Any idea of secondhand prices ? | DPPSO::SMYTH | | Wed Aug 24 1994 10:27 | 18 |
| I was originally thinking of a Hunter Formula 28 which is a very nice
and very fast quarter tonner. Theres one in the club where I sail and
it regularly drubbs the Sigma 33's. I sail on a Farr 24' which has on
occasion drubbed the Formula 28 but thats another story.
What I liked about the Melges was its small and fast and looks like it
doesnt need a big crew to sail it. The photographs of them racing
seemed to feature a crew of four. (You need six for a formula 28). It
can be hard to organise a crew to go racing so the fewer people you
need the better. I also liked the idea of being able to put it on a
trailer without needing a crane. Opens up the possibilities of sailing
during the winter when the weather is good, currently the sailing
season ends in October when its no longer feasible to leave boats
safely on moorings because of wil meather.
Has anyone seen any advertised secondhand ? Just curious at the price
level they command compared to new.

2158.5 | There is a Melges at Fay's Boat Yard | UNIFIX::FRENCH | Bill French 381-1859 | Wed Sep 07 1994 13:50 | 8 |
| There is a Melges at Fay's Boatyard, Gilford N.H. on lake Winnipesaukee
that I raced against (with my PHRF of 296!) over 4th of July weekend.
The guy who skippered it works for Fays - I don't know if the boat is
owned by the boatyard or is privately owned. You could call Fays at
603 293-8000 and ask for Sean. What's his last name, Ray?

2158.6 | Talk W/ Sean Mulligan | UNIFIX::FRENCH | Bill French 381-1859 | Mon Sep 12 1994 12:30 | 8 |
| I was at Fay's Saturday. The Melges (24 I assume) is in the water.
They guy to talk to is Sean Mulligan. He works for Fay's Boat Sales
(as opposed to Fay's Boat Yard). The Phone number for the boat yard
should get you to him, I expect.

2158.7 | Some prices in answer to 2158.4 | MARX::CARTER | | Mon Jan 16 1995 17:12 | 9 |
| re: .4 In the January '95 edition of Rags, a couple of Melges dealers
have boats listed for $32K for 94s, one listed as new, the other nice,
both with trailers. One dealer also has a 93 with trailer and 2 sets
of sails for $34,950.
One of the ad talks about a Melges 30 coming soon.
