2133.0. "Big Storm in South Pacific" by NZOMIS::MITCHELL (Glen Mitchell @NZO) Wed Jun 08 1994 09:03
The fleet of a race between New Zealand and Tonga has been hit by a
huge un predicted storm resulting in one yacht with 3 crew being lost
and at least 6 yachts being abandoned in various states of damage, with
fortunately no other loss of life.
The Search and Rescue services have reported horrif10-12 metre seas and
say its a miracle that no other lives have been lost.
Naval support vessels, and commercial vessels were directed to the area
to rescue the many yachts in distress... The "storm" hit the fleet on
Saturday 4 June... I understand that the SAR effort was called off
today (Wednesday 8 June) and all hope for the missing crew, all New
Zealanders is now lost.
