2123.0. "Sonar Advice" by POCUS::HO (down in the trenches...) Tue Apr 12 1994 17:39

After much comparing of boats, my sailing buddy and I decided to
buy a used Sonar, and have started our search in earnest this past
week. Our price range is $7K-$10K. We live in Queens, NY so we've
been scouting the Port Washingtion area.

I'm looking for any general advice folks might have on:
    1) buying a used boat
    2) experience with the Sonar
    3) what a good price is

We've only seen 2 Sonars so far:

Hull #334 1984 DS Yacht, very good condition (as far as we can tell), 3
sets of sails (1 set is 1 year old with light sailing), no trailer, no
    outboard, asking $8,000

Hull #331 1984 DS Yacht, similar condition as #334, just sold at $6,900

We're looking at another this week:

Hull #370 1986 Ontario Yachts, very good condition claimed, 3 sets of
sails (1 set '93/used once), trailer, no outboard, asking $11,500

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    David

Sorry I forgot to add keywords to my basenote.

Newspaper adds are not productive for buying or selling one design
    boats.

I suggest calling David Franzel at 617-227-4198 who can give you the
names of the fleet captains in the Long Island Sound area. From them
you can get the names of owners wanting to sell.

For boats as new as these, it's unlikely you'll encounter a really bad
    hull.

Enjoy the search. It's as much fun as the sailing itself.

For a second there, I thought I told myself to call myself :^) It's
so rare that I run into someone with the same last name in Digital.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm writing this note as the proud
joint-owner of Sonar Hull#334 which we'll be sailing back to our
mooring this weekend. I can't wait.

What do you sail? Have you sailed a Sonar? I've sailed and race on
and off over the past 8 years, but owning a boat is a new experience
for me. I'm already finding that buying the boat is only the first
step in depleting my money supply. Any advice?

    Regards,
    David
