Last week I received the annual mailing from West Shore Marine announcing
CY94 launch and mooring charges. Included with a glossy brochure was a
letter indicating West Shore would not be providing launch services to the
Rockmore this season. The letter continued to state that in order to
offset the loss of income from providing services to the Rockmore, West
Shore was increasing mooring and launch service fees.
Since I rent a mooring from Barnegat (and not West Shore), my launch fees
would increase from $375 to $475.00 !! No grandfathering for repeat
customers, no sliding scale - a 26% increase - take it or leave it !!
I talked with the West Shore folks at the Boat Show on Saturday, and
communicated my displeasure. The response was pretty much a deaf ear.
The purpose of this note is to let you know the seascape is changing
in Salem/Marblehead Harbor. In talking with a non-Digital boater
(rents from West Shore) he mentioned there may be a new launch service
starting up in Salem Harbor. Has anyone heard about this new service ?

$475 for launch service alone??!!?? WOW! I'm over at Hawthorne Cove
Marina and for the second year now launch service is INCLUDED in the
mooring fee. Not sure if this is just for return customers or if it
applies to all. For another ~$200 I'm getting mooring, parking,
showers, launch...... Things aint that bad in the neighborhood just
yet!

This is to provide additional information about launch services in
Salem and Marblebead Harbors.
In the base note, I described plans by West Shore Marine to
significantly increase launch fees for folks using their services in
Salem and Marblehead Harbors. During the last two weeks, I have
continued gathering information about alternate and planned new launch
services.
This morning, I spoke with Frank Thompson of Barnegat Mooring Services.
Recognizing a market opportunity, Frank has purchased 4 boats to offer
a new launch service, and bring some competition to West Shore Marine.
Barnegat's launch fee for the summer '94 season is $375.00. The hours
of operation will mirror those of West Shore (as a minimum). Additional
service hours (beyond those available from West Shore) will be considered
based upon demand. Concerning the four boats purchased by Barnegat, 2
will operate from the Marblehead side and 2 from Pickering Wharf.
