I caught a segement on the TV last night about 11 meter sailboats. They are minature versions of the 12 meter boats. They are not the mini version ones. These take 5-6 crew, (900 lb max for class racing). They use a high tech keel system similiar to the boats in Perth. Prices were quoted at $30,000-40,000 US. The scenes of these babies in action ( they quoted 20 knts under spinakker with a "good" wind) looked like San Fransico Bay. With the current issue of Sail magazine showing J/80s, Mengles 24s, and some other small high tech wonder, it looks like the industry sees a segment growing in smaller club racers.

I think I read something in my newest sailing world about these boats having taken up a class home in SF Bay. Part of the immedeate popularity in the class was said to come from some form of corporate sponsorship. I didn't see anything about how this works, but something about it scraping 15K off the purchase price. It looks like it would be a fun boat, but I want something I can sleep on too. Geoff |
