This is a little tip that most of you may know, but since I haven't seen it in the sailnotes I post it just in case it will help someone. Before you leave the boat at the end of the week-end close the intake seacock of the head and pump all the water in the ball out. then drop 1-2 gallons of fresh water in the ball and pump out again. The difference in smoothness after the fresh water disolves the salt in the pump is amazing. It also extends the life of the head pump too.

Another way to smooth the pump handle is to spray Tri-Flow (Teflon spray in a can) on the pump shaft and around it while working the handle. 2-3 pumps later it glides up and down with nearly zero effort. |
