2065.0. "Chance of a life time !!!!!" by IOSG::TENNANTT () Thu Jul 29 1993 05:33

Let's suppose someone offered you a sizable grant to gain a better understanding
of the lives and work of people in other countries overseas, and to aquire
knowledge and experience which will make them more effective in their work and
in the community when they return.

Sounds too good to be true, however its not and I may have the oppertunity to
recieve one such award.

However to proove my worth I must propose a project that fits into the category
of Sailing and explain where I propose to go overseas and how I would benefit
from it etc.

Although I have considerable sailing experience both on big and little boats I
am having trouble thinking of a suitable project, does any body out there have
any ideas for possible project themes, or at least give me a pointer to somebody
who could help me.

Cheers,
Tim Tennant

A two year sabbatical sailing between the islands of the western
pacific to study the local custom and economies of the indiginous
peoples. Many of the more remote islands and even some of the more
populated ones have a substantial barter economy. They also have a
strong sense of community. Both could be used for experience in the
business and civic environments. There is more than one way to make a
buck and my observation at least locally is that the sense of community
has long since disappeared or exists within a more homogenous
environment ie. clusters of folks wtih similar backgrounds that have
    settled in an area.
